Not yet. I haven't figured out if it will run alongside IE7.

From what I've been able to gather it will not run side by side but it does have an IE7 emulation mode.

Installing it on my XP machine in the basement - just in case. I know I said I wouldn't, but that dang curiousity is something I can't beat at times

On the XP machine - it went fairly well. It installed and rebooted (Thank God!). I did a few screen shots which I'll get uploaded later. I found it interesting though that when I opened IE 8, that one of the "Activities and Web Slices" was Yahoo!® Maps.

Yes - I dd have Internet Explorer 7 on that machine. It probably took about 10 - 12 minutes to install. It seem to take a few minutes on "checking for malicious software" during the install.

It will be interesting to see how that "Emulate IE7" mode works, there might be no need for a standalone IE7 - although you can get this on virtual pc if you run/want it.

RE: IE8 beta - 3/28/2008 23:02:51
I got a message from my ISV region about the beta-release so I downloaded it and put it on a machine that I rarely use to just get an idea. I am like Corey in that my curiosity got the better of me. Haven't really spent a whole lot of time with it but here are some initial observations...

I have no idea as to why but once I got IE8 Beta installed I glanced at the Outlook (Outlook Day Screen) and noticed that it hosed up the way it looked. There were dark underlines under the tasks and calendar entries? Curious as to why this might be, doesn't matter I guess just found it kind of odd...

I also went to a few sites that I knew had heavy Ajax functionality and was able to "lock it up" . I also noticed that some of the ajax behaviors were sort of "off" and even "broken". Now this isn't to say that there might have been something on my end but prior to installing it I know that these ajax things were working correctly in IE7. The emulate IE7 made the items work again.

I am sure that this release is going to be a while off and they will eventually release a "fixed" version but this is what I have found so far...

OK, here's the deal. Emulate IE7 will make non-compliant and invalid sites work. IE8 renders in standards mode as, well, as standard. Non standards sites will need to put a meta tag into the page to tell it to render in IE7 mode. Basically MS are finally indicating to people that they can no longer develop badly coded sites and get away with it.

I had to go back to "Emulate IE 7" to access the Microsoft Windows Update Website. I took a screen shot and information for a post at some point, but it told me I needed to have at least 5.5 installed to access that website.

I would only recommend installing it on a machine that you can play with, one that you do not rely on.

NO! You mean Microsoft's own site is not standards based. Well stap me sideways and knock me down with a feather.
