pritecting a website - 3/6/2008 13:23:40
The web hosting company being used by an organisation whose website I support/maintain has (for a number of reasons) moved the website to a different server. Among other things, this has meant that the subweb setup is no longer available. i.e. although it is a Windows based website, the Frontpage method to set permissions, etc on the subweb to protect it and allow only those with the correct usrerid/password entry has been removed. When I asked for the permissions I was informed they could only set the subweb to the main account FTP userid/password which is totally useless. There are a number of html pages, pfd files, photographs, etc which need to be protected. Is there an alternative way I can set up a userid/password to protect the website and the files in it. Thanks, Rannoch

Do they offer something? If not, you might check out some of the scripts on hotscripts or even SpookyLogin. If it is folder specific, they should offer something - some hosting companies will have something similar to htaccess which is pretty good.
