SerenityNet -> DVD in My Computer but opens to no files (3/7/2008 23:43:51)

Everything working fine then DVD/CD burner stopped working. I tried a few things to no avail, but figured it had a good hard life, so I just went and got a new one. But it doesn't work either. Hmmmmm

  • It shows in My Computer, but when I open to explore nothing shows.
  • In programs, such as Windows Media Player, the drive is grayed out, even with a CD in it.
  • It opens and closes the bay door just fine.
  • It seems to spin up just fine.
  • I've been to the device manager, deleted the device, then looked for new plug n play hardware, found it, and reinstalled just fine. Still no change. (I've done this several times, as I swapped configurations.)
  • Device status shows as, "This device is working properly."
  • When I go to the Hardware Properties, with a disk in it, is shows "Disk CD-ROM 0", "Type: DVD", "Status: No Media", "Partition Style: Not Applicable", "Capacity: 0MB", "Unallocated Space: 0MB", and "Reserved Space: 0MB".
  • I have it set up as the master on the Ultra ATA cable. I have a hard drive set up as the slave. The hard drive has zero issues.
  • I swapped the jumpers and put the DVD/CD drive as the slave and the HD as the master. No change in behavior. HD still came up fine. DVD/CD showed in My Computer, but cannot explore.
  • I tried the DVD/CD drive as the Master, but without the HD on the cable (in case it was a power limit problem). No change.
  • I swapped the jumpers to cable select. No change.
  • I swapped the power cables. No change. (HD works with either set of power cables.)
  • I swapped out the ATA cable.
  • I've got a bigger power supply, but I don't see this as a power supply problem, so I haven't swapped it out yet.
  • I've searched some other internet sources.
  • I've changed my IDE Channel Properties from "DMA if available" to "PIO Only". No changes. (Changed it back.)
  • I replaced my registry with a backup from before the problem. No change.
  • I edited the registry to delete the upper and lower filter keys.
I'm to the point where I'd just copy over my new files to another drive and use Acronis to take me back in time a month ago, but I can't use Acronis because I don't have a working CD drive.

I'm wondering if 'repairing' Windows XP-Pro would do any good. (But, hmmmm, I'm wondering if I can boot from CD. Need to try that. Maybe Acronis would work.)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Andrew

UPDATE:
I can't boot from CD. I tried with both Bart's PE Builder and the Acronis CD. I get the prompt to boot from CD, but when I press enter, space, y, or anything it just takes me to the Windows prompt where I can choose a 'profile' or last known good configuration, and then boots to Windows. It won't boot from CD.

I also tried SafeMode. It recognizes the drive, but when I open it to explore the window justs shows blank.

I also tried changing my BIOS, so it doesn't auto detect DMA on the DVD/CD drive.

Now I wonder what I can do, since I can't boot from CD.

UPDATE:
Changed the power supply. No help.

Spooky -> RE: DVD in My Computer but opens to no files (3/10/2008 19:30:21)

Try the DVD in another machine? Sounds like hard ware, but at least swapping to another machine would prove it?
