Godaddy Server Unavailable Exceeded Connections - 3/13/2008 23:00:07
I have a small website that receives about 500 visitors a day. I have been hosting on Godaddy using their Deluxe Plan for several months and today my site showed "Server Unavailable". I contacted Godaddy tech support and they told me I had exceed my connections which is 100 with the Deluxe Plan and they recommended that I upgrade to the "Premium Plan" for an additional $8 a month, ($15 total a month), which would give me 150 connections.

My question is, are they blowing smoke up my butt as how could a site my size have 100 coonections open at one time? I have no way to monitor this and the only way I could get out of having my site down was to fork over more cash. Have others seen this type of problem with their hosting companies?

Is there a better hosting company that I can get frontpage and asp support through, that is easy to use, provides ample connections and doesn't break the bank?

Thanks for any suggestions!

It's usually the bandwidth you need to pay. I never heard of 'connections'. Are you running a database like MySql? What did the error message say?

All the screen showed was "SERVER UNAVAILABLE" in big bold letters. I am running a sql database. At first the tech started talking about bandwith but when I tried to pin him down on usage he spoke to another tech and stated it was number of connections.

Right now I think the site is up again. But here is a long shot what you can try. It happened with my site. Just try to create a second or even third user for your database. If it is a database 'connection' that should give you another '100'.

Don't know if this will solve the problem but it worked for me. In my case I did quiet a few changes which required to connect to the database and counted against me. Adding another database user solved it.

Hello jurgen,

I have the same problem too. My site also host in godaddy account, it happen this few days. Service Unavailable and 503 network problem. I lost a lot of visitors and my adsense drop just because the problem. I checked my site in google webmaster tool and there shown that half of my site pages were network unreachable. This is sucks...

May i know you mean create a new empty database? or just create 2nd user for the existing database?

Many thanks...

Regards,

Richp

Hello jurgen,

Thanks for your fast reply. May i know how do you create another user for the existing database? Because i can't find the page to create another user.

Thanks.

It's quite possible that Google, MSN, Yahoo et all have all hit your site at the same time and are gaily spidering through it. That immediately gives you a whole load of additional connections.

I set up a shop for a client who was leaping up and down with glee that she had loads of people in the shop and one of them had over 6000 items in their interest list. When I checked it was just Google having a nose around.

I recently switched over from Godaddy to Drupalvaluehosting.com and the service has been excellent.
