Free custom map Mashups - 3/14/2008 12:22:22
Thought this looked like a keeper. MapBuilder.net is an Web2.0 service or rapid mashup development tool to build custom Google and Yahoo maps without any knowledge of the Google/Yahoo Maps API and JavaScript. MapBuilder provides a decent visual interface for the map building process with geocoding and import features. Also MapBuilder lets users tag locations on their maps, and then publish the map either on MapBuilder.net or their own website. Link

I couldn't figure out how to generate a link of the map I requested so that I could link to that from a clients web site.

You have to register with them and get a key from Google. All free. Regards Rich

I just hate registering with anybody. It always seems to generate lots of spam emails. Maybe I will use a throw away email address.

Ahem...oops! Well, I'm new at all this. Just wanted to ask you guys: Could this be used to populate a map of the US with dot of light when a new member signs up on a website, using the zip code to locate the dot? What all would a person have to know to build this feature? Or is there code out there for this already, at a low cost?

Here's one I found by searching Google. It's for all the places you went on a vacation but you should be able to modify it to suit your needs. http://www.biondani.com/giordano/help.htm

Thanks very much, Don! For my further education, what search terms did you use on Google? Any hints for searching for other open source/free code for my website?

Don't remember the exact phrase but "how to populate a map" is close.
