MCD -> Paint Shop Pro Replacement (3/17/2008 9:08:23)

I have used PSP since the days of PSP 6. Since PSP 7 the program has been getting slower, bloated and frankly worse. Can anyone recommend a good graphics program at a decent price? I am using PSP 9 now and it has some nice features but it eats memory. If it would work on Vista I would keep it but I am not sure if it will.

I love Photoshop Elements - it's a cut down version of Photoshop, it's got about 80% of the functionality but it's a fraction of the price.

Or if you're feeling really cheap there's always the Gimp which is free, very powerful and pretty un-userfriendly.

I may look into Photoshop Elements. I have heard good things about it. What version are you using Tailside?

I'm on 4.0 at the moment

Thanks Tailside. My new laptop has Vista so it is difficult to know what programs work the best for me. It seems every graphics program out there is buggy.

I use PSP 8.0 with Vista Business. Not often ( I use ULead more), but it does work when I use it. Is ver 9.0 not supposed to work with Vista?

I have been getting different answers on every article I have read. I have not tried installing it yet but I plan to do so before buying another program. PSP 12 sounds good but if the program has not improved I'm switching to something else. I am also looking for something more stable than PSP 9.

Stick with Paint Shop Pro 8. It still beats the socks off Adobe Elements. I just purchased Elements 6 because so many on this board like it but it sucks. Takes forever to load, is slow and bloated. It has separate programs to do different things and each of those programs take forever to load. Also the thing that did it for me was the way you make a photo larger, (to view, not resize permanently). In PSP you use the thumb wheel on the mouse. In Elements you have to click on a magnifier Icon, then click on the mouse for preset enlargements then you have to figure out how to go back. A big time waster!

Plus, in Elements, every so often a ad pops up out of nowhere to distract you.

I'm running PSPXI on Vista (Ultimate) and I honestly can't say that it's slow in any way. Earlier versions were annoying slow but things seem to have improved. Frankly when I tried to move to Elements I just couldn't get the hang of it. I was never able to get the look I wanted for my images and some things I can do with a click in PSP I never found a way to do in Elements.

Errr eh? I've never seen any ads. Have you got a demo or trial or something?

I have all 3. PS, Elements and PSP. I use PSP for drawing. Elements for web graphics work. PS rarely gets fired up unless I'm doing photographic work.

Tailslide -> RE: Paint Shop Pro Replacement (3/17/2008 17:03:05)

Yes i've used elements for about 4 years and never seen an ad.

treetopsranch -> RE: Paint Shop Pro Replacement (3/17/2008 20:32:15)

I am using 'Essentials 2.0' plug in for Elements and I suspect that ad came from there but I could not reproduce it.

The latest Serif PhotoPlus has been given many top awards / positive reviews and is also certified for Windows Vista. Might be worth a look?

SERIF

Yes, I use that also and like it. I mentioned it in the Graphics sections of this forum.

I installed PSP 9 on my Vista machine and it works fine. I am still considering Elements in the future. The only function that PSP does not have that irritates me is the difficulty in blending images.
