kidblank -> Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/19/2008 13:59:56)

Hi,
I'm working uploading some new photos to the company website, but when I try to publish I get the error message:

unable to access the file frontpg.lck check file permissions

I don't know how to do this, or do a work around- can anyone help?

Have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=264954

hey- i can't figure out how to unistall the server extensions, nor can i find a help topic about it. do you know what i have to do?

treetopsranch -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/19/2008 16:30:10)

After Googling your problem the consensus is to just delete that frontpg.lck file from your server. Frontpage will re-create it. Hopefully that will fix your problem. It's located in the _vit_pvt folder

kidblank -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/19/2008 17:01:46)

Not to be totally dense, but I'm new at this, and i can not find the _vit_pvt folder. Where should I be looking?

It's a hidden folder but will show up if you use a FTP program. Download Filezilla (free) and go to your website on the server not your home computer. Try not to affect any other files as that could corrupt your FP extensions. If you are not sure about what you are doing then try to find a friend that knows how to do FTP and have them do it for you. You or your friend may have to change file permissions temporarily in order to delete that file and that takes a little ftp knowledge.

Beautiful. I'll try it. Thanks again.

it's _vti, not _vit right?

coreybryant -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/20/2008 10:05:08)

Yes, _vti folder.

kidblank -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/20/2008 10:25:34)

man- i'm banging my head against the wall. i've gone in and deleted all of the .lck files. i've made sure that all read-only files were unlocked, i've reinstalled frontpage, i've changed the format of my images to tiff and gif, and i've run diagnostics to fix any errors.

i can not figure out why i can't publish new graphics on our website!

treetopsranch -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/20/2008 16:43:11)

Did you get rid of that error message? If so, then something else is going on. Can you post a link to your problem web site?

kidblank -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/20/2008 17:01:49)

no, i'm still getting an error message. i went into the hidden folder and turned off all of the protections and removed all of the .lck files. i messed around with filezilla, but don't know enough ftp to get it to work.
the site's here: sternindustries.com
thanks for all of the advice.

uplink earth is our server and they've white list protected all of their ftp- i'm wondering now if that might have something to do with the problem.
cheers

How large is your website? Does it have a lot of files? Some web hosting companies have a file limit.

Also, deleting some files might cause some other problems. Usually uninstalling FrontPage won't help in this matter (or in most matters).

kidblank -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/20/2008 18:05:23)

it was my server(uplink earth) they had a security break and are blocking all attempts to manipualte clients' websites that aren't prearranged. totally fixed now. thank ya'll for the help!

coreybryant -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/20/2008 19:59:09)

So we bill uplink earth for our time on this issue then? [;)]

kidblank -> RE: Unable to access "frontpg.lck" (3/21/2008 8:48:10)

please do, i'm writing them a bill for the time that i've spent on workarounds. thanks again.
