Font size - 3/20/2008 16:28:47
I recently created a website in Frontpage 2002. For most of my text I used size 10 pt. When I view the published site on my monitor (which is 17", the font looks fine but when I view it on a smaller monitor (more than one), the font looks HUGE. How can I fix it so it looks small on any pc?

Thanks.

Power To The People: Relative Font Sizes - an old article, but it will give you some pointers.

Size Matters - and even older article but still has some valid points.

How to Size Text in CSS will help a little more.

Now to get into a bit more - pt (points) are usually used in print, not web development. Basically for accessibility, use ems. For control, use pixels. But depending on the user's resolution, there might be some slight differences.

Thanks for the articles Corey. Being fairly new to this, I am not familiar with CSS. Is there another way to make the font changes?

You can make them in HTML, but the font tag itself is deprecated (most browsers will support it thought still).

However, with FrontPage using the GUI, you are pretty stuck with something like
<font size="5">testing</font>

It is much easier to control your font sizes in a style sheet - this way, if you need to make a change, it is made on one page and uploaded. And all pages are changed automatically.

Using the font element with FrontPage will sometimes keep putting in extra unneeded elements.

Is there any ifo out there for beginners as to how to create a style sheet? Once I do this, do I then use the style sheet link option to add it to the site? I used a FP theme too. Will it allow me to keep the theme but will it just edit the font styles? Thanks so much!

The themes might have a style sheet (it's been such a long time since I used those). CSS Tutorial and CSS Zen Garden are two site my roommate used to learn and create style sheets (even converted a template that was created in Photoshop to CSS - and never used HTML / CSS before.

There is also a very basic How to Create a Style Sheet and Managing Your Style Sheet that might help some as well.
