review of pihapeikko - 3/27/2008 17:50:47
i've only roughed out a visual so far but would appreciate any feedback on this
http://pp.kpnet.fi/prescott/stuff/layout_image_only.png (it's about 650k)
EDIT: it's now here http://pp.kpnet.fi/prescott/stuff/pihapeikko/

it's for garden design, fengshui design and garden therapy

the text is holder text for now (and in Finnish anyway so who cares ;)

the pics are placeholders (though the lily is hopefully staying)

the logo developed from a line drawing (drawn by the client, my cousin-in-law), coloured and with some added frippery (you can't beat some good frippery!)

the brief was a clear, simple site with warm pastels including pink, peach, and of course green

thanks for any comments - be as critical as you like

p.s. pihapeikko means 'garden troll'

Very pretty. I like the design - are the heading images just the leaf as a background or is it image replacement?

Only thing I'd make sure about is that the nav bar has a background-colour appropriate so that when the navigation is increased in size there's a background colour to make the whole thing look good.

the headings will just be plain html on a background, hopefully.

yes the navbar will have that gradient as an image repeated on the x-axis with a matching background colour for when it expands. i always test early on for text resizing as it's horrible when you have a nice design that falls apart really easily ;)

thanks for the comments.

i did wonder whether the background vine art was strong enough, but when i tried it stronger it took too much focus away from the main design... the lily and the pink thing are from my garden (well i should really say my wife's garden :) last year.
the bottom two pics are just quick snatches from google image search and will be replaced with the client's own images before going on line as they don't belong to us ;)

incidentally many of the flower/leaf/planty shapes (- not the vine art that's mine) - are from here http://www.brushes.obsidiandawn.com/nature.htm

I like it; can't understand it but I like it. I like the simple top-to-bottom reading and not cluttered with left and right column 'clutter'. Clean, simple layouts are refreshing and I think that's a nice one.

my cousin-in-law just emailed me and said the site looked really pretty and the colour choices were, er on the button (or something along those lines as my Finnish isn't great). .. so i'll just see how many changes there are going to be :)

thanks for all the comments.

Yes, the pink pink site I did now gets to be redone using less pink. I love it when I'm right. :)

Very nice site. I really like the design. I am in school for internet application programming, and it gives me ideas about design.

The Skip to Navigation/Contents are nice accessability options. The graphics flow well with the site.

Alternate text on the images would be nice to describe the type of flower or the details of the image.

The loading time was somewhat slow, but it could be because we are so far away geographically.

Very nice work!

thanks.

i need to add the alt to the lily but the other pics are placeholders.

i also need to revisit the image optimisation too!

;)

edit: i've knocked about 40k of the page size so it's down to 82k now ;)
