Is it really this easy? - 3/31/2008 0:11:22
Hello. I am glad to have found your forum. I recently started playing around with frontpage, and have a website about halfway ready to publish. I have absolutely no webmaster experience and only basic user computer experience. I have found that frontpage seems to make this process extremely simple. But my question is; Is it really this easy? I have zero knowledge of html, and rely simply on following instructions. Most of the terminology is foreign to me. I took about 30 minutes of on-line tutorials, and thought I was ready to go. So, if I keep going with this, can I actually keep a website up and running with my limited knowledge?

Only if it is a personal or family site, then you should be fine, as long as you have a host, and, if you are using frontpage's functions (ie form handling) then your host will need to support frontpage server extensions (FPSE). And it is still a good idea to learn at least the basics of html / css if you want to be able to maintain a site...

It's fairly easy to produce a website in a short time using a WYSIWYG editor. It's much harder to produce a website that works well for people not using a specific version of IE or people with larger or smaller screens or poor eyesight or no eyesight etc etc. In other words - as Womble says, if it's just a family site where you know for a fact that everyone uses IE6 or IE7 and that everyone has good eyesight and can use a mouse then you're probably absolutely fine. If you're building a business site that the public will be looking at then you'll need the site to work well for as many people as possible. If you're in the UK then you need to make some efforts to ensure that the site is accessible to the disabled too. At the very least you should be checking the site in as many browsers as you can download onto your PC - e.g. IE5.5, IE6, IE7 (don't worry about IE8 beta yet), Firefox, Opera, Safari PC. If the site works properly in all of those then you've made a good start. The hardest thing will be building a good site in the first place (and by good I mean attractive, effective and accessible) - once you've got that done then maintaining it shouldn't be too hard. You should definitely look into using "Includes" to streamline the maintenance of the site - in particular if it's a large site or likely to become large. Also bear in mind that if you use Front Page gadgets that fewer and fewer web hosts will be supporting the FrontPage extensions that make those work (so it's likely in my opinion to get more expensive). Microsoft has moved on to Expressions and wants it's clients to do the same (and shell out more money obviously!).

Make sure that you use the Frontpage tutorials on this site ( thin blue bar at the top of the page), they are great for beginners.

Everyone has to start somewhere. And building a web site is an ongoing, challenging and rewarding endeavor. I started my first web site building in 1996 with just the Front Page that was included with the Windows 95 O/S. I still don't know much about html but have learned enough along the way. And you will too. The internet is a constantly changing and growing entity, and if you find at some point, you want a presence there, you will do whatever you need to do and learn whatever you need to learn to attain it. And it is great fun. I am still using FP today and this is a marvelous, wonderful forum with the most helpful, knowledgeable people you will ever find anywhere. Welcome to FP and a whole lot of fun and sometimes a tad of frustration. But there are many here who will help you through the rough spots.
