Yes it's pretty broken in Firefox too. Both the navigation and the footer are all over the place.

You didn't by any chance use Word or Publisher or something like that to do the site did you? It mentions Microsoft Office in the markup...

Any way - width-wise if you want to restrict it to a certain width then you can set the required width on the containing table - currently it says 100% which means that it will expand to the width of the browser - which will be a problem as you haven't designed the contents to do this.

You could change it to whatever you like - 900px, 1200px whatever - but be aware that under that width you'll get a horizontal scrollbar.

It'll take some work to get it to work well at all widths.

You should also spend some time on that navigation - it may well be blocked by many peoples' browsers or just not function properly as it appears to be java applets. You'd be better off using HTML instead - more easily usable by more people and just more modern looking.

Not trying to be difficult - but some of the images will only look ok in IE as I think they are FP shapes (or some other FP thingy)? They look fairly poor in all other browsers. See attached:

You know - looking at your site, it doesn't give a very impressive impression - I'm not trying to be rude here by the way! I think that the idea of the site pretty much depends on giving out a really slick image. If you don't want to pay for a designer to do the site for you, what I'd suggest is to either look at buying an existing template with a slick, professional design or, even easier in the long run, install WordPress on your server (if you have fantastico in your control panel then it takes about 30 seconds to do this) and then go find one of the nice free WordPress themes. That will make it all very easy to maintain. Lots of support for ads etc in WP.

Wow when i view it in fire fox it don't look like that nor in Opera

You didn't by any chance use Word or Publisher or something like that to do the site did you? It mentions Microsoft Office in the markup... Opps yes cut and pasted from clients word doc copy

Any way - width-wise if you want to restrict it to a certain width then you can set the required width on the containing table - currently it says 100% which means that it will expand to the width of the browser - which will be a problem as you haven't designed the contents to do this.

You could change it to whatever you like - 900px, 1200px whatever - but be aware that under that width you'll get a horizontal scrollbar. so if i set it at optimal 750px it should show and lock on most res screens am i correct?.

It'll take some work to get it to work well at all widths.

You should also spend some time on that navigation - it may well be blocked by many peoples' browsers or just not function properly as it appears to be java applets. You'd be better off using HTML instead - more easily usable by more people and just more modern looking. yes unfortunatly this was the type of navigation my client requested except he wanted the button color to stay yello on the page being displayed I cannot figure that one out thought. thank you so much for you very quick reply and I hope this looks ok on the reply cheers Derek]/color]

Badly broken in Firefox here too.

That menu is awful. You don't need to use javascript to do something that simple. Use a css menu.

http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamatic/horizontal26.htm

just replace the green button images with some of your own.

As for copying and pasting from Word etc. it's one of my pet hates. Look here for things not to do, specifically the section about Word etc.

You refer to him as your client. If you are seriously intending to do this on a business footing then also take note of the link to the book at the bottom of that page.

You might get away with a site like that for now but when IE8 comes out you're in trouble.

You also need to look carefully at the Companies Act legislation regarding web sites as those guys have a business in the UK. You also need to check out the Disability Discrimination Act for their rules on web sites.

Hi Jaybee
Thank you for your links and your advice I am actually using ie8 beta 1 and the site shows perfect in it at up to my max res 1380 on a 17" monitor in fire fox the only prob i have seen is the page over running the footer, i cannot understand all this break up I have deliberatly view on a different pc to the one I was using to build the site. Any way I think i might try to do a complete new rebuild in either Dream weaver or another web generator that i have This was a first attempt for my (friend/client) I am not trying to make a living at it
Once again thank you for your feed back and support
Derek

I've sent you the links to the relevant legislation for UK business sites.

I would seriously suggest you think about getting that book whether you intend to use FP or Dreamweaver. It will help you comply with the DDA rules.

It will also help you overcome the problems with the site breaking.

You have no doctype. There are a lot of errors in the code and once you've added a doctype you're likely to find those increase. You need to fix them.

You might be able to get the book faster from Amazon.
