dzirkelb1 -> Dual monitor dispaly and video cards (4/3/2008 17:00:50)

I am reading up on dual monitor display, and it appears all I need is another video card and plug em both in, and do some stuff.

I want to know if there are certain video cards that are needed for this to take place...or will any old cheap 50 dollar one do?

This is all business, so no graphics intensive card will be needed.

thanks!

Or, is there an easier way to do dual monitor than two video cards? Looking for cheapest way / easiest way.

Since it is all business and no gaming/intense high definition video, you should be able to pickup a 2nd video card.

If your motherboard supports two video card slots, then buy a video card for that slot. If your motherboard only has a single video card slot, then you will need to find a PCI based video card (not AGP, not PCI Express). You will need to make sure that your motherboard has an available PCI slot on the motherboard.

I've been using a Matrox Millenium edition dual head graphics card for years now and it works great.

If you are happy with your current graphics card I would suggest the Matrox DualHead 2go looks like the easiest option.

- That's 4 times more expensive than just grabbing a cheap video card though, definitely easier, but at a 4x price.

dzirkelb1,

You may not need a second video card. Read this first:

All laptops have an extended monitor jack, so all you need to do is plug in the second monitor. Most desktops do require a second-monitor card, which costs about $35. However, my last two Dell Desktops came with an OEM second monitor jack so I was in business right away after purchase of another monitor.

For operation: I usually have my primary monitor in the left position and the second monitor to the right, but they can be set-up either way.

With the desktop displayed on the primary monitor, right click the mouse in an empty desktop space, then:

Left click on “Properties.”
Left click on the far right tab labeled “Settings.”
Left click on the number two monitor box.
Left click on the check box at the bottom left that says “Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.”
Left click on “OK.”

Your icons and start button will remain on the left monitor. When an application is opened, make sure the window is not maximized. In the top right corner of the window, you should see a minus sign, then a box and finally an “X.” If you want a particular application to appear on a different monitor, click in the title bar, which is the blue bar at top, and drag it to the other monitor.
