Need advice on two database systems - 4/5/2008 18:00:07
Okay, one of Wombley's strange requests coming right up...:)

I have a site done and I'm working with an organisation who are in need of two database systems. They need to be web based so that different members of the committee can access them and take over another committee member's role if need be due to illness etc.

I know some MySQL and PHP, but to be honest, in the time available (they need something by the end of May) and with my other commitments there's no way I'd be able to do this myself.

The first is a penpal database which would hold details of organisation members looking for a penpal, obviously with fields for their contact and personal details, their interests, age, sex, possibly area, etc. Possibly individual members would be able to update their own record, but that's not essential as long as whoever was responsible for maintaining it could edit stuff. Once the information's in there it would need to be searchable so that whoever's responsible for maintaining it could match up potential penfriends, and there would need to be some way of recording matches made. I've scoured the web looking for something suitable but on the whole only come up with dating site scripts which would need a hell of a lot of tweaking to get them to do what I need it to do. I did find one penpal script, but it was very basic (and which I've managed to mislay the URL for :)) and I'm now going round in circles banging my head against the wall.

The second is a database for a medical register, holding details of doctors who specialise in treating a specific condition. Again obviously fields would be needed for storing the personal details and contact details for the doctors, along with their specialisms, experience, fees etc. This one would need to be secure, only accessible by whoever's maintaining it.

I'm looking for probably MySQL/PHP (they're on a *nix server), and as it's a non-profit organisation and they have no funding to speak of, either open source/free or very cheap would be preferrable. Alternatively, how much would they be looking at to get something custom made (ballpark figure)?

Any ideas anyone?
