Move MS Application to a new PC, no disk - 4/5/2008 19:09:44
I have an old, but licensed, copy of an MS application (Project 2003) on an older PC. Sadly the disk is long gone. Is there any way to transfer the application to another PC? Thanks in advance, Andrew

I would borrow a CD from a friend, download it online, or try to find a trial for it online that converts when license is entered. Sometimes when you ghost one computer, it may not completely work on another computer, unless hardware is the same. I may have an image of a ms project 03, so if you don't find one, I may be able to upload it somewhere for you.

Ah, glad I asked. I didn't even think about just using someone else's disk and entering my license. I always thought the license code was specific to an individual disk; that I had to use the license code that was supplied with that disk. Since we use Project 2003 at work, I can just borrow a disk from there. Thanks! Drew

Drew, Businesses usually have a commercial license that allows them to install as many instances they need, with a single CD. Normally, a regular license won't work on that CD. It's worth a shot, but if you get an invalid license error, you may want to try another CD.

<$.02> That usually works unless you're going across versions i.e. OEM and Retail licenses. AFAIK the algorythms know the difference between them. </$.02>

Hmmm, I guess not so simple. The original was installed at my old workplace. Then the office closed and I purchased the PC. I know the licenses weren't kept or forwarded to any other division. But I don't know what type of disk may have been used for the install (OEM, Retail, or whatever). The LapLink may be a good way to go. But it makes me wonder if Acronis might work. I have Acronis and I know it will back up a specific application's "settings". I wonder if I backed up the settings using Acronis, copied the Program Files to the new PC, then applied the backed up settings to the new PC, if this might work. Or am I just having crazy thoughts. Another thought... I do have a Project 2000 disk. But with Project 2007 already out, I don't suppose I could 'upgrade' to 2003 for less than the $50 I'd put out for the LapLink solution. I'm not interested in 2007, since my current workplace uses 2003. My main purpose was simply to legally put 2003 on my personal laptop, so I could learn and practice when doing personal travel and don't feel comfortable bringing my work laptop. (We're going on vacation to Mexico in a bit and I have an old laptop I could use, but it wouldn't be a tragedy if it got 'lost'. I won't be taking my work laptop.) Any other thoughts? Thanks, Andrew

I would just use your license and download an image of the CD online. Don't think you can find an upgrade for project 07 at a low price. This eBay seller looks legit, MS Project 2007 Standard for about $100

I think the key word here is "Vacation". Leave the laptop at home and forget about the whole thing. I did! That is, I forgot about the 'whole thing'. I did take the laptop, as our daughter-in-law was in the hospital and we wanted to check our voice-mail without incurring international charges. But I resisted the urge, didn't check personal e-mail, didn't check work e-mail, and didn't play with MS Project. There might be hope for me yet :-) Thanks all. I'll get back to you later when I get to chase this matter again (hopefully soon). Later, Andrew PS. The vacation was great. Cozumel was very nice and we went at the 'perfect' time of year. The only advice I would have for others is do it while you're young. We relaxed, but I can't say we rested. We played like we were kids - and we're not!
