Reviving old image - 12/9/2001 0:31:47
I have a .gif image that was created some years ago. It is a fairly simple, low quality, 2 colour image that I would like to be able to use again and would like to recreate it as a vector image so that, amongst other things, I can resize it easily for use on corporate stationary, etc. I have PaintShop Pro (v7) and Image Composer but not being an artist, my ability to do it from scratch is fairly limited. I would like to be able to "trace" the old image such that I have an outline that can be colour-filled or textured.

Does any one have any clues as to how I might achieve this with one of the above programs.

Thanks

Any chance you could publish the image somewhere so we could have a look? It may be possible to do something but without seeing it it would be difficult to make suggestions.

Katherine,

It's a bit late here on Sunday night for thinking too hard so have taken the easy way out and e-mailed you a copy of the image.

Thanks

Replying here in case others are interested. Cleaned it up in IC

This is what I did.

1. Create a filled oval the size of the existing one
2. Create an oval in a different colour the size of the inner oval
3. Position the second over the first and snip to create the unfilled oval.
4. Make a bright yellow (or pink or whatever) rectable the size of the original gif, send it to the back and flatten it and the gif.
5. Using the curved cutout tool and 400-500% zoom cut around the edge of the cat. Carefully, but do not worry about gettting some of the yellow into your cutout.
6. When you have your cutout fill it with black for a smoother cat.

You may need to play around with cutting out the cat - I had problems with the tail but just cut the tail off my first cat, cut him a new one and stuck it on.

I have sent you the mic as I didn't save it as a transparent gif and do not know what bg you want for it.

Katherine to the rescue, yet again! You are not only an IC guru, but a complete graphics guru. I wouldn't have thought to spend so much time to clean up a grapic like that -- and yet you've shown us that it was very worthwhile.

Please consider putting this and your other recent step-by-step tutorial on Image Composer somewhere on either Linkks or InkkDesign. They're too good to lose.

Spot on LB!

In many years of IT industry involvement, no-one, but NO-ONE, has offered me the type of excellent service us mere mortals obtain rom the gurus of OutFront. To have access to such a wealth of information on such a wide range of topics is priceless, the camaraderie is great and responses like Katherine's are fantastic.

The image in question was the only one the client had and whilst it could have been re-created from scratch, to have it revived overnight was more than one could expect.

Thanks again Katherine.

Jim
