Publishing options - 4/11/2008 19:14:18
Hi group.
I've been reading through past posts about publishing...and wanted to ask for some clarification.

I have a site live currently, but the new site I've made and want to publish is vastly different in
style/appearance.

I am anticipating the options FP will give me when I go to hit "publish."

Last time, I chose what I thought were the right options, but somehow
the old site sort of "merged" with the new site....and I had components of
both on the new site. It was sort of weird!

SO, what is the best option?

Overwrite what is there, delete what is there....?
(I don't have FP open to the publish function right now, and cannot recall exactly what the
presented options are....helpful, eh?)

Thanks.....
Brenda

You have two options: published only pages that have changed, or publish the entire site (overwriting what's there now.)

Before you publish the "new" stuff, BACKUP your "old" site (just in case - wink.) Great options and instructions for doing that here: http://accessfp.net/backupfp.htm

If you have "new" pages with the same names as "old" pages, those will overwrite the pages at the server when you publish. Front page should list them and ask you if you want to overwrite them when you publish. Make sure each one should be replaced, and say "yes."

If you have "new" pages with different names than the "old" pages, but you want to replace the old with the new, you can either rename the new pages to match the old (imho, the easiest and safest solution) and refer to the above paragraph, OR after you publish the "new" pages, look at the Remote side of the web in FP, and right-click, Delete the "old" pages that were replaced by "new" ones.

The other option is, if your "new site" is vasly different from the"old" one, choose the option to publish all pages and overwrite the "old" site with the "new" one. I would still take a look at the Remote side after you publish to be sure there aren't any "old" files lurking there that you'd like to delete -- better to do it while the new stuff is fresh in your mind and you are sure what to delete.

I hope this helps.

Sally

Sally:
That is all VERY helpful.
I will try it tomorrow, and let you know how it works out.
Thank you VERY much,
Brenda
