suggestions re: platform to emulate - 4/14/2008 15:47:30
Hi, I need advice on the best platform to use for a new site. I've built with FP, DW and now Expression. I'm learning Joomla as well for another client's site. A potential new client has changed their wishes; they want a site like bbcus.com. They want to be able to quickly and easily change the product line themselves when the site is finished. The bbcus.com has css and js; I'm struggling with the best way to approach this...please advise, Thanks, Sharon

bbcus.com uses javascript, CSS and HTML. Is your client fluent in those programming languages? You know, Sharon, your question has been asked many times here and the answer is always the same. If they can handle those languages and maybe handle a WYSIWYG web site editor then maybe, just maybe you can let them make their own updates. However, get it in writing that you are not responsible for screw-ups and that you will charge them x amount of money per hour to fix any problems. Let them look at the source code at bbcus.com and see if they can understand it. Otherwise let them use WordPress. I don't think you can have a store on WordPress but I may be wrong about that. You need to go to the WordPress web site and check it out.

I agree with your arguement....the thing is the folks at bbcus.com make changes in limited areas to their site; adding product and so forth...I was wondering if there was something like in a joomla type app or such that would simplify that process?? Thanks so much, Sharon

Whatever CMS you choose - Joomla, WordPress, Drupal etc - they're going to have to go on a learning curve, it's not going to be very simple. Having looked deeper into that site - it's basically an online shop without the transaction part so you may well be better off looking at an ecommerce platform like Zen Cart or CubeCart. That would probably make the adding of products slightly easier but the initial setup from your end will probably cost them more. Course the other option, depending on how often they think they'll want to update the site is to have a maintenance contract with you where you add products. If it's just once or twice a year then it might be worth their while to do that.
