Site search uses cached version - 4/15/2008 19:08:08
I just found out something interesting. When you ask the Big G to do a site search, it actually searches its cached information from your site, not the actual live site. I just did a search of my site to look for email addresses and was surprised to see some old email addresses that I replaced about 2-3 weeks ago with new addresses. The live page shows the updated info, but the cached version shows the old info, and it's the old info that shows up in the site search. Apparently the pages where the old addresses showed up have not been crawled since then.

Just thought I'd share this. I didn't realize that's how the site search worked.

AFAIK generally speaking, the more popular the site and the more frequent the new content, the more often it's crawled.

I have found that submitting (or re-submitting) a sitemap sometimes speeds things up. Are you familiar witht he Webmaster Tools for Google?

But no, Google is not a real-time search. Just think of the scope of that if it was... :) :)

I update usually twice a month, so it's not surprising I'm not crawled more often.

Yes. I tried to put a sitemap together, got tangled up and gave up. I even tried one of those sites that say they'll do it all for you, and still found it more complicated than I could deal with. How lame is that? :) I guess I should keep trying but I get discouraged whenever I try. (I know: whine, whine, whine...)

And just think of the data storage they have to use to keep snapshots of every website accessible!
