Web site - instructions & flow critique needed - 4/17/2008 16:53:02
OK. I think this is the first time I have posted for a critique since joining OF some 8 years ago.

I am not much for design, so I expect many of you will have good ideas. Mostly, I am looking to see how others view the instructions and the flow of the site. As the developer, I am way too close to how things work to know if my instructions are clear and easy to follow.

The site: www.SplitTesting.com

Thanks,

Mojo

A quick reaction;

One typo stands out - "Increasing" spelt wrong in the heading. Unless of course it is the American spelling.

The validator shows 12 errors all of which would be relatively simple to fix.

The layout looks basically OK but perhaps the two columns could be separated more about 10px extra padding would do it. Also a few more images would make it more interesting, perhaps thumbnail screen shots showing a split test.

Soooo close to "Free Spit Testing"

Can you use another phrase other than "Free Split Testing"?

Yeah... I have actually typed that many times. Unfortunately, that is the name of testing program. It is know to marketing and serious web analytics people as Split Testing or AB Split Test.

I never validate.

That's a good idea.

Any thoughts on the instruction process? Does it make sense?

You go for it! You stand up for your right to turn making errors into a principle! :)

I normally do not critique sites because I have no eye for design, I'm much more of a developer, but I thought I could surely read and follow instructions. :) It is the least I could attempt with all of the good info you are always supplying, Mojo.

Anyway, the process seems very straight forward. And the graphics really tops it off. I was on the "how it works" page.

I like that you offer to do page changes for the client, but it may be a bigger selling point and you may want to highlight it more (unless this isn't something you really want to get into!). Maybe a quick note in step 2 of the process.

And, btw, I clicked on "features" and "how it works" was still highlighted.

Hello Mojo,

I’m a relatively newbie to websites, however I could not tell what you did with your current heading and logo. I did not know what Site splitting was, and you didn’t tell me. Your image ‘The best way to . . ., did not answer to me what site splitting was. It was not until I read “A split test is a way to make more than one version of your website . . .”, that I knew what your website does. I would move this information before telling me I can get Free Split Testing (which should contain a link).

Your telephone number has more digits than carter has pills and is repeated twice on the home page. This type of information belongs on you ‘contact us’ page.

I believe your start here button is linking to the wrong place, it links to registering. This may be where you want to start but not where your users want to start. Perhaps a list of benefits your website offers is a good place to start.

You are using two columns. And I don’t know which one is more important, ‘A powerful renue machine’ or ‘Do you want to make more money’.

Your ‘How it Works’ page does not tell me how it works.
You asked for a review of your instructions, and I don’t see any instructions.

When I go to the features link, the How it Works active link is highlighted.

I don’t follow the site well.

I hope my suggestions to you are helpful, and request you visit and critic my site and give me your suggestions.

ZipLabor

Lazy. I have been mostly concerned with the program and the instructions. I have noted your comment - thanks!

Thanks Brian. It is something I have been doing for my clients for several years - I just neglected it on my site. Obviously, I haven't done any split testing on my own site!

I fixed it after you pointed it out - thanks.

ZipLabor - Thanks for your comments. Most/all of the people that would use a split testing service are those who take conversion rates/ROI very seriously and usually, already know what split testing is all about. That does not excuse me for not doing a better job of laying it out and I will use your comments as motivation to better explain the service. Thanks again.
