Why is uploading so SLOW? - 4/18/2008 14:55:42
Okay, I have done plenty of research and can't find a SOLUTION to this problem. My site takes FOREVER or times out when uploading even a very small change in EW.

Here is the specs: Site was designed using FP 03 and imported into EW through the hard drive. The site is outdated with plenty of old code but I don't have the time to recreate the whole website from start at this time. I will in the future but if EW can't upload at a decent rate then I will just use another program. I do have a shopping cart on my server so there are some files that are on the server but not in EW locally. The site is rather large (100 pages or so with 1000's of images on the server within the cart system). And I am NOT using FP Extension.

The problem is if I change one word on the site it ends up taking me days to get the change on my server via EW's FTP connection. It literally takes hours while it is "listing pages in..." so it normally just times out or a connection gets lost. So I constantly have to try again. I never had any problems like this using FP or when I use FileZilla to upload something. And if it does actually get to the point where it starts uploading my upload speed is about 6-9kbs. I'm on Road Runner so it should be significantly faster than that. As stated, files upload quickly in FP and FileZilla so it is not a connection speed. And yes, I have tried the Passive setting in IE and it really doesn't matter what the setting is as it doesn't seem to effect anything.

Now maybe I should just use FileZilla to just upload everything but I find it ridiculous that I have to use an outside program instead of the built in FTP client with EW. Not to mention trying to figure out which files I do need to upload. And it seems that is the case for those that have similar problems. I have no problem moving on to a different program if Microsoft has no solution for EW to work with large websites. Is EW design just for people building small 5 page websites?

Suggestions?

When you go to "Publish Site" a dialog box comes up with 3 tabs. Under the "Publish" tab have you checked off to publish "Changed Pages Only"?

Yes, it has always been (and is) set to Changed Pages Only.

Are you on dialup. I had a host that took forever to upload FP page changes. Even simple one page changes. But when I switched to Broadband all was OK. All my other hosts, when using dialup, were 1000% faster that that one slow host. They could never give me a good explanation for that. I suspect they were giving priority to broadband users.

if you do use filezilla is it significantly faster? i was just wondering whether it seems to be an EW specific problem or a connection thing.

As stated in the original post I am on Road Runner (Cable modem if you didn't know) so I have decent upload speeds (a few hundred kbs). And Filezilla and Frontpage have always uploaded fast. So yes, it is a EW specific problem.

From what I have read on the net with people having similar problems it seems to be something I just have to live with which I find no excuse for. It seems that everyone just says "deal with it" instead of finding out what the problem is. Obviously there is something not right if ftp connections work fine with other programs.

Currently uploading at 12kbs.....woohoo! Only 4 hours to upload something that was a 30 second change to the site.

And just an FYI. my computer is extremely slow while it is uploading. It keeps retrieving pages from my hard drive, uploads them and then goes back and retrieves another file. And this has been happening for months since I originally got EW. Just so you know it's not a new thing, I have had this problem since day one.

I'm also using EW with a site of about 300 pages that was built with FP 03, and it uploads very fast, so I don't think it can be EW that is causing your problem.

I use FrontPage extenstions to publish.

I did not "import" from FP, just opened my site in EW, and it worked just fine.

Maybe your pages got garbled some way when you imported???

The way I figure it is even if it was a problem within the pages the upload speed is still crazy slow. But even at those slow speeds it should still only take a minute or two to upload the changed page. I have noticed that when it is uploading, the program seems to check every page/file/image one at a time but doesn't upload them (that would take months at these speeds). But it does check every file one at a time from what I can see. It seems that when I go to publish it does the checking to compare local to remote file dates to find out which ones need to be changed. But for some reason it "retrieves" every page while it is uploading. I know that is one of the issues that is causing my computer to run slow when uploading.
