topcop38 -> win98SE USB? (4/25/2008 20:10:18)

i'm working on a windows 98SE computer trying to transfer files from it to a new Vista machine. the 8 machine has 2 USB ports but i have tried both my thumb drive and my WD passport and the 98 won't recognize either. after doing a search i have found a few generic drivers and have downloaded them onto a floppy but when i try to install them to the 98 i get an error. the 98 will be removed from service after i retrieve the files. any suggestions?
thanks for the help.

i've already tried the 240075up.exe from there and it didn't work.

take the hard drive out the win98 machine and put it into the new one?

i do this about 4 times a week -

if you're just transferring files (and not trying to transfer programs), pull the drive from the 9x machine and put it in an external enclosure...then plug it into the new machine. 3.5" external enclosures can usually be found for about $10-$15 USD...then you can format and use the old hard drive (depending on its size) for file backups.

Just a thought.

that could be an option. in its current format will my XP machine recognize the other HD without reformatting it? i'm thinking i have to reformat it before it will work with my PC. is this right?
i already have a second HD installed in my XP but i'm not using it. this is my moms old PC and she just wants to keep her pictures. after that i'll use the HD for whatever.

No, it will just recognize it as an external drive.
You can pull all the data off it, and then plug it back into the old PC and it will work as before
