elitedragoon -> Corrupted registry preventing my Windows Xp from starting (4/27/2008 14:50:30)

My computer was fine for most of the day, but the next day when I turned it on I get a screen saying "Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

It asked me whether to Repair, so I pop in the windows xp cd, booted the pc off the cd, loaded it, then when I got to the part with the three options: "Install Windows Xp", "Repair Windows Xp, and the other one being exit. I tried the install windows xp, but it ended up with a blue screen of death right after the the partitioning drivers part of the setup.

I then tried the repair windows, which led me to the Recovery Console command prompt looking thing. I have little (better yet no) experience with the command prompt, but I did what I could. I tried the steps given by Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

I got to the md tmp part, but when I enter it, it gives me access denied.

When I bring up the F8 screen with the safe mode, etc stuff on it, I try to get it to run on safe mode, but it would still give me the screen explaining that a file is missing or corrupt.

Also, I don't really care about the stuff in my hard drive, is it possible to reformat the hard drive from the recover console. I just want to get my pc working again, even if I lose all the stuff on the hard drive (lot of it useless stuff).
