I call it "Hard Drive Enclosure" and they are handy indeed. I got one a while back.

EDIT: But those are external USB...

Will something like this work? It needs to take the laptop hard drive (i need to recover data off of it) and be able to plug into another cpu to get the data.

Should work fine. As long as the computer that you're connecting it to has USB anyways, I use them regularly.

*I do see them cheaper at tigerdirect.com and I have very good luck with those guys:

I think this one will work great:

Thanks! USB is definately what I would prefer, much easier than taking apart my cpu and setting up a slave :)

Another type is a "NAS" or network attached storage - typically those are 3.5" though, but have a bit faster throughput over the network vs usb

I always have a 2.5 hard drive enclosure spare for storage of files - more capacity than a usb stick and not large at all :)

Do you like those NAS boxes? I saw a 'shell' NAS device that you drop your own 3.5" drive in for $69 while I was looking at the enclosures. I remember when those NAS's first came out, they were $1K+.

I am tempted to say the least. Do a little video serving inside my home...sounds cool to me. [;)]

A nice little toy to play with !
Get one with Linux, web server, file server..... the works :)
I just use mine as central storage / backup for my 4 pc home network
