website designed in flash and I need help - 4/30/2008 21:18:29
I have a friend who has asked me if I can update his webpages and keep them updated for him. I have been able to download the webpages, however, I have no idea how to get into them to change anything. They are not in Dreamweaver per se and were NOT designed by me originally. The pages are Flash.

I have no idea what to look for to see if I can change the text (as that is most of what would EVER need to be updated).

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Well it isn't html so you will have to purchase a flash program and just start over. Try adobe.com but be prepared to spend big bucks.

I have flash .... but the only files that flash will open are the 2 .swf files and when I open them, they open as if they were opening in a browser. I get no opportunity to open anything else. Any ideas?

You will need the source files. FLV extension.

wouldn't those extensions have to be uploaded to the server as well? shouldn't they be with the rest of the files?

No your client should have the source files somewhere. You need to ask them to give you everything the original developer gave to them. When you publish an FLV file it produces a SWF file which is what is placed on the web server.

Okay, I have the .fla file now and can open it in Flash .... I can even go to the pages within and change some of the text .... but when I save and then try to reopen the file ... nothing has changed.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here. Is there anyway you can help me further?

If your using a PC when flash is open and you have made your changes hit ctrl+enter at the same time and it will preview the movie for you and create a SWF file in the same folder. If is that SWF file that will contain the changes. Does that help?

Okay, now what have I done. I was able to make changes and then save the file and then upload it to the server but now the page only loads to about 66% and then just stops.

Any ideas what is going on now?

This is a classic lesson for all developers. Before agreeing to look after a site, always check the site out, what it's built with, the host and any dbase add-ins.

Not all web sites are equal.

Actually I haven't agreed to look after the site as of yet. I am still trying to get it figured out.

However, I changed the address on the contact page as well as on the bottom of the pages throughout the site and ran a preview of it on my browser at least 10 times total before I posted the result to the actual site. At that time it worked properly online, but then I asked the owner to take a look to show him that I THOUGHT I would be able to help him out and he told me of the problem and so I tried to go to the site and BAM ... a problem.

Now I don't know what the problem is.

Flash is diffrent from the other web programs. With AS3 your dealing with a full blown OOP not some type of Javascript hybrid.

Since I couldn't find that I had done anything wrong I decided to try uploading the pages again to the host and now the pages work like they should.

My thanks to all who offered help and support.

Before you agree. try changing something a little more complicated, like add an new menu item. What you just did was the easy end of the scale, it gets more complicated especially when you start dealing with timelines. Personally I wouldn't take on a Flash site if you threatened to hit me with wet kippers.

You knew I'd Google Kippers didn't you. I love dried fish. A treat at tea time.

On a serious note I've been bringing items on to the stage and setting time with script and it is much less cpu intensive for the enduser.

Thanks, I told him ahead of time that I know just enough Flash to get me into trouble and he told me that about the only thing he could think of at this point in time was changing text. I told him there might be problems should he need more.

One of the reasons he asked me is because we both work for a software development team making computer wargames and I make a little money on low cost web design for people who need something nice, yet inexpensive.

P.S. I figured if he asked me to change something else I could ask you guys for assistance or a lead on more help. But as I said, I did warn him of my limitations.

if you ever get into a situation where you don't have access to .fla files, use a decompiler.
