greenflash -> new layer moves with browser (5/1/2008 10:50:33)

Hi All,
New here, and pretty new to web. Our web master is unexpectedly unavailable, and I've been trying to keep things fresh. Here's my latest problem:
I added a layer to our home page (www.denpubs.com) and when you resize a browser window, everything moves but the new layer. It's up there live now, so you can see it for yourself. Tried nesting to other layers on the page, which solved the problem, but moved the frame to a weird spot.
Any help (a.s.a.p. of course) would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

The url you sent isn't loading at all.

It sounds like you've positioned the layer absolutely (which isn't generally a good idea - too easy to get wrong). Difficult to give more advice without seeing the site.

I haven't had any trouble getting to the site:
http://www.denpubs.com
I also tried changing the code from absolute to relative. All that did was relocate the frame, but it still had the same problem.

It's saying that the server is taking too long to respond.

Changing it from absolute to relative isn't the right approach. Without seeing the site it's pretty hard to tell. It depends on how it's been built.

Ideally you'd either rely on the normal flow of the page or float the element if you need it positioned left or right within another element.

If you're stuck using absolute positioning for some reason then you need to ensure that the element in which the absolutely positioned item sits has position:relative in it's rule otherwise you're positioning relative to the viewport rather than the containing element - which isn't what you want.

Basically - make life easy for yourself and stick to the normal flow of the page if you can!

Thanks Tailslide. Sorry you can't see the site - I'm able to click the link in the response and get right to it. I'm still pretty darned confused! This page was designed by someone with skills, and it is a combination of graphics, text, a flash file, etc. There are a couple other layers on it, which I tried to nest my layer to. It solved the problem of the layer moving (or not moving while everything else did) but positioned the layer in an odd spot. I'll keep fighting till I get it right!

greenflash -> RE: problem solved (5/1/2008 12:07:55)

For the record, I fixed the problem. I nested my new layer to an existing layer. Dreamweaver moved my layer off the page, but I was able to find it and move it back to its proper position, and now it's working fine.

Thanks! I'm sure I'll be back with more dilemmas!
