Soulkeeper -> Help would be very much appreciated (5/2/2008 23:20:51)

So I am completely new to web design since what I know of html is the one I use on my myspace (almost nothing lol). I am not new to computers though, since is what I've been working with for the past 4 years.

Anyways, I decided to make a website using frontpage since I've used it to do some small updates to a website for the company I used to work for and I came with this idea that I've seen before on other websites, since I want to do a not "too big website".

Here is the link for a big picture of how it is looking so far Web Sample
And this is a small view of it

What I want to do, and is what I hope someone can help me with, is to make that little square where it says "Description about business" stay the same size and have a scrollbar on it so the box can have more text without getting bigger (higher I mean). And the second and last thing is that I don't want the whole page to reload when the buttons are clicked, but that the content of that box to load with the new info (depending of the button pressed) so that the rest of the page, including the flash animation and the music I want to add to the website doesn't stop and restart everytime you click on any of the button.

Again, I hope this is not too complicated to explain to me. Thank you in advance for your help on my first website project [:)]

Eeeeek, well two eeeks actually.

First Eeeek.

Don't have music automatically playing. Unless the business is a band it has no business (mmm?) having music playing. If you must have music and flash on the page then allow it to be turned on and off. You'll find both annoy the heck out of people if they can't turn it off and they'll leave the site.

If it's a short Flash ad then it's not going to matter if the page changes and it starts again. If it's a long flash explanation or demo then it should be something people can start and stop as they wish. Having it running all the time takes attention away from the rest of your page.

Second Eeeek.

The old way of doing this was to have frames. Frames cause all sorts of problems though so avoid them if at all possible.

Go to the tutorials at the top of this page, click the Frontpage link, scroll down a bit to the "Getting Started with FrontPage" link then read the one about using Includes. That will allow you to have just one header and one menu bar that get called in to all pages. If you make a change in them it goes across the whole site.

Third Eeeeky. Developing using Internet Explorer only will mean that when you have finished what looks like a very nicely designed site, if you load it up in Firefox or Opera etc, it'll be all over the place. Download Firefox and keep checking your pages in that. When they work there, then fix for IE.

Fourth. When you get stuck and you need help on here, upload your latest page to the web, finished or not, so we can see it and the code behind it. Makes our life a lot easier.

PS.

Myspace isn't a word you should mention in the same breath as web design. Myspace code should be listed under the category of "Pig's Ear" [;)]

Hi,

I just created a website on frontpage 2002 and I have extensions installed on my computer already. However, when I try to view my site online, nothing shows up. But I am sure I did the steps correctly because I got a message telling me the site was published successfully. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thank you.

On your computer? Do you mean the FPSE are installed on your host?

Can we have the URL to the place where your site should be?
Make sure the home page has the correct name as designated by your host. Probably index.htm or index.html or home.html

When you want to ask something please start a new thread of your own. If you just add the question to somebody else's thread it'll get missed. I only found your other two posts by accident.

You click the "New Post" button and then type your problem.

Is this a paid for or free account with Stokia?

We need the URL you are using to access your site so we can see the page and problem for ourselves.

To start a new thread, go back to the list of posts in "Microsoft FrontPage Help" or whatever other section you are interested in, and hit the New Post button at the top. That will allow you to create a new question thread all of your own. You're much more likely to get answers quickly.

Hi,

It is a paid account with Stokia.com. It is the 35/ yr. account. The website domain I created is www.us-shaolinkungfu.com I tried re-uploading the webpages through frontpage 2002 again and this time I didn't get blank pages. Instead- I got a page that says Internet Explorer cannot display web page because it needs to log in or something. Thank you very much for your help.

Hi jaybee,

Thanks a lot. I started a new thread already. Please give me some advice if possible about my uploading problem.
