Can't copy from old OS drive to new drive - 5/21/2008 22:46:20
I've got my old master drive with the OS and data on it. It has XP-Pro SP3 on NTFS. I now have a new PC with XP-Pro SP3, on NTFS, on SATA1. I put the old drive in on SATA2. The old drive shows up in My Computer. However there are certain directories that I cannot browse or copy files, but it's not consistent. Most of the files I cannot copy to the new OS drive are in one of the old My Documents folder. However, I can copy a few files from this directory. There are also other directories where I could copy all the files, except for one or two. Very odd.

Anyway, I put the old disk back in the old PC, logged in as Administrator, shared the whole drive with full permissions to everyone, and dragged all the files I wanted to the primary user's desktop (where I successfully grabbed all the files earlier). When I put the disk back in the new PC, I still couldn't copy any of these files.

I can put the old drive in the old PC, copy the files to a USB drive, then copy them from the USB drive to the new PC. But that would be a pain. (The two PCs are networked, but the old OS is dying and I've been unable to get it to share with any other PC on the network.)

Anyway, any ideas that would let me access the old drive when it is connected to SATA2 in the new PC? If not then I'll do it the hard way, but I thought I'd ask first.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew
