yellowbird -> password protection (5/26/2008 13:32:44)

I have a site on which i wish to password protect a page. I have created 2 files; htaccess and htpasswd which were save in my root directory as htaccess.htm and htpasswd.htm
Now, do i upload them to the server as such or should i be inserting the codes in that particular page?

Thanking you in advance

Ron

They go in the directory in which your passworded page resides.

Thanks for your reply, but if you read my post that is what i have done. Both files are in the root directory.

So are you saying it isn't working?

quote:

htaccess and htpasswd which were save(ed) in my root directory as htaccess.htm and htpasswd.htm

That is incorrect. They must be .htaccess and .htpaswd. No extension.

You can go here for more info:

http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess.shtml

Just curious, doesn't Expression have a help file on how to password a page or directory?

Just being picky... the .htpaswd file should be below the visible folders/files (thus below the public_html or www folders).

That file contains all of the encrypted usernames/passwords, so it isn't good to have visible online.
