WindowsXP and FP2000 (Full Version)

I recently upgraded to WindowsXP. Now, when I try to upload revisions to my websites I get the following message: "An error occurred accesing your FrontPage web files. Authors, if authoring against a web server, please contact the webmaster for this servers site. Webmasters see the servers system log for more details." HELP! I am so frustrated. I have no idea what to do. I am uploading to Geocities, which I have had no problems with until I changed to XP. I have not been able to get assistance from them.

I havent yet been exposed to XP.

Am I right in believing that the frontpage / office extensions still need to be installed.
Only the pro version has the server installed I believe?

Anyone else?

Are you using XP Home or XP Pro?

Home does not support the server extensions or IIS, where Pro does.

Does anyone know of any compatibility problems with FP 2000 and XP Pro? I want to continue using FP2000 with XP Pro.

I have upgraded to Windows XP and I had FP2000. Everything was working fine. Just upgraded again to FP2002 yesterday - everything still works ok for me.

My upgrade to XP pro and FP 2000 seems to have a clitch.
I get a server error cannot create folder for _vti_cnf.
I tried to publish all pages as recommended in a posting but that didn't work either.

Thanks for the responses. From what I am reading, the HOME version of WindowsXP (which I have) and FP2000 are incompatible. NOT good news. So, are WindowsXP Home and FP2002 compatible? I do not want to have to get the pro version of XP unless I absolutely have to. Any other suggestions/solutions out there. I have got to get my webpages updated.

There should be no problem running FP2000 or FP2002 w/ Windows XP home edition. I suspect the problem is with the Geocities server. What was the response from them?

Looking at the links in the above responses leads me to believe that FP2000 will not work with XP Home. No one has given me a specific way to make it work. When I went to upload updates, I got an error that my files could not be read. See my original post. I have not been able to get any response from Geocities.

I've got FP2000 running on a WinXP laptop and we have three running at the office. No problems.

Do your machines have the Professional or the Home versions of XP? That seems to be the issue. I still get the error msg. I mentioned above and can't resolve it.

The ones I mentioned before are running XP Home.

I believe your problems are related to Geocities, not your OS

I have fixed part of the problem with publishing with XP Pro and FP 2000. I found that two files (_vti_cnf & _vti_pvt) under the themes directory were marked read only. After changing that atribute on those two files all pages seemed to publish O.K. with the exception that all of the words in the nav buttons dissapeared except those on the index page. I am now trying to fix that problem.

I just tried to run the MS Windows XP Advisor to see if there were any hardware/software issues I'd need to upgrade/work with/adjust. Must've been because halfway through the process the damn thing crashed my computer.
Guess I'll do as it says on ZDNET--"If you're comfortable with 98, stick with it"

I too am having my problems with the XP/FP 2002 combo. I had Win 98 and FP 2000 on my old computer ,no publishing problems ever. Bought a new computer, it had XP installed, bought FP 2002, now cannot get site to publish to Tripod. Had to go to a computer tech to get a site published to my own domain, did this by ftp. Only problam there was that XP saves my folders in a whole different path and I couldn'f find them.However, I am going to be taking FP classes onine and will need to upload to Tripod, apparently this might be a problem? I have gone into Tripod and activted my server extensions but it still says that I do not have thme intalled and there is no web site there.

Ok folks, I finally got some real answers. I finally go through to Microsoft on the phone and due to the fact that their online support has been offline, I got some FREE answers.

I was put through to the Frontpage help desk. Guess what, there is NO conflict with Frontpage 2000 and WindowsXP Home version(pat yourself on the back if you said this all along). They had me upload one of my pages to their server, it worked perfectly. So, the problem was Geocities after all.

To fix it, I went into Geocities and under RESOURCES selected HOME PAGE SETTINGS. Then, I clicked on the link that says DELETE WEB SITE. I was concerned that I would lose the entire account, email and all, but it only removed my website. This CANNOT be done using the File Manager. I then had to re-establish my webpage and upload it again. It worked beautifully!

I still don't know if the original problem was due to the change to XP Home or if it was a conincidence. My gut feeling is that the change did cause the problem, but, as you see, it is easily remedied.
