table borders won't separate in Firefox - 5/29/2008 13:02:20
Hi everyone,

Here's a switch: I'm having problems getting a table to display properly in Firefox 2.0.0.14, and yet it displays fine in IE7. (!)

The page is here. Warning: if you're highly squeemish about medical illustrations - nothing too gross though.

Note: I'm going to delete the above link after I have found an answer to this or given up, whichever comes first. Please also bear in mind that this website is created using a CMS and my ability to make coded changes is somewhat limited.

The text and illustrations should be in boxes that have 15px of space separating them (using a table definition that includes border-collapse: separate and cellspacing=15 ). Strangely, IE7 puts the spacing in correctly, but Firefox collapses the boxes together.

I've searched around this site and others to try to find out what the problem is and hopefully a solution, but nothing seems to match my situation. Maybe it's something obvious I'm overlooking?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm pretty sure it's the border-spacing property - it's set to 0 in one an included stylesheet. Changing this seems to fix the problem.

Thanks very much Mane. Unfortunately I don't have access to the external CSS definitions, but I'll try setting that property in the in-line table code and see if that works. I appreciate the help.

I wouldn't drive yourself too crazy about this. If you can't find a reasonable solution [shrug].

No-one except us lot will be comparing the site on multiple browsers. As long as it looks good in all browsers and works well then that's what matters.

You're probably right, Tailslide, although I prefer to have it looking reasonably consistent. (Me <-- glutton for punishment :) )

As it turns out, putting in the border-spacing property in the table declaration worked like a charm. Thanks Mane!
