running out of memory - 5/30/2008 10:59:03
As I work along, open and close programs and use memory for various tasks, it seems like "stuff" gets left behind in memory and my computer starts running slow and I get messages that memory is low. Is there a way to clear out the memory without restarting my machine? And is there a way to look at my system and actually see what is in memory and clear it out? I only have 512 so that is the start of the problem. I use XP on an HP Pavilion conputer.

Cache, Restore Points & Startup (task bar) programs could be contributory culprits.

Cache is self-explanatory (IE7 default is 1024 mb) - clear it periodically.

To clear all Restore points (XP default is 18 mb): Start >>Control Panel >>System >>System Restore >>Check "Turn off System Restore on all Drives".

Startup Programs: Start >>Run >>msconfig >>Startup. Un-check unnecessary programs >>OK >> Restart.

Also, press Ctrl/Delete to see what programs are running and how much memory they are using respectively. Outlook 2003, prior to fairly recent updates, was a total memory hog as I recall. Others may surface using this method by reason of apparent abnormalities.

Hope this helps :)

Compusa just went out of business here. Any suggested good sources to purchase memory?
