SerenityNet -> RE: An Internet Services for Windows (wininet) error occurred. (6/13/2008 0:19:40)

LONG VERSION: Nope, not the port - well, kinda... I checked the error in the MS knowledge base, which pointed me to this. But that was a waste of time. Then I was playing with my FTP client and found it wouldn't stay connected when in passive mode. So while in Expressions Web I went to Tools / Application Options / FTP and saw "FTP Connection Mode: Active". Aaaah! So right below the line, "FTP Connection Mode: Active" there was the hyperlink, "Learn how to change the FTP connection mode". Wow! I clicked it and found the general help file. After 20 minutes of searching for "FTP", "Connection Mode", "Passive", "Active", and whatever else I could think of, I gave up. It should be called the "helpless" file, instead of "help" file. So I searched the knowledge base again. I found this, which was a little more helpful. It said that I could have IE run in both Active and Passive Mode by selecting "the Enable Folder View for FTP sites option (no matter what the Use Passive FTP Option says)." But I found that didn't work. When I deselected the "Use Passive FTP Option" then it worked instantly! Whew! SHORT VERSION:- Close Expressions Web
- Open IE
- Go to Tools / Internet Options / Advanced
- Select "Enable FTP Folder View (outside of Internet Explorer)".
- De-select "Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility).
- Restart Expressions Web
- Voila!
