An Internet Services for Windows (wininet) error occurred. - 6/1/2008 8:49:13
I'm trying to open a remote web site. I receive the following error: "An Internet Services for Windows (wininet) error occurred." I have another web site on another server and it opens in the remote web site view without any problems.

I saw this post and tried unchecking the "HTTP 1.1 Settings" boxes, but that hasn't helped.

I've also noticed that IE is always opening to the runonce page. I have no idea why, but I thought I might mention it, in case it is related.

Any ideas? Right now, I have to download the pages with an FTP client, edit them in Expression Web, then upload them with the separate FTP client.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

UPDATE:

I use McAfee ActiveArmor as my software firewall. I turned it off and tried to open the remote site. I received the following error message:

"Could not find a Web server at 'ftp.rrcc.org' on port 21. Please check to make sure that the Web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the Web server may be temporarily out of service."

Once I turned the firewall back on then it went back to the original error message.

I also went into IE and tried turning off "Use passive FTP", but that didn't do anything.

I could almost understand if I could not open any remote sites, but it is only this one site that I cannot open in Web Expressions. And the same site opens just fine in a traditional FTP client application (like WS_FTP).

LONG VERSION:

Nope, not the port - well, kinda...

I checked the error in the MS knowledge base, which pointed me to this. But that was a waste of time.

Then I was playing with my FTP client and found it wouldn't stay connected when in passive mode. So while in Expressions Web I went to Tools / Application Options / FTP and saw "FTP Connection Mode: Active". Aaaah!

So right below the line, "FTP Connection Mode: Active" there was the hyperlink, "Learn how to change the FTP connection mode". Wow! I clicked it and found the general help file. After 20 minutes of searching for "FTP", "Connection Mode", "Passive", "Active", and whatever else I could think of, I gave up. It should be called the "helpless" file, instead of "help" file.

So I searched the knowledge base again. I found this, which was a little more helpful. It said that I could have IE run in both Active and Passive Mode by selecting "the Enable Folder View for FTP sites option (no matter what the Use Passive FTP Option says)." But I found that didn't work. When I deselected the "Use Passive FTP Option" then it worked instantly!

Whew!

SHORT VERSION:
  • Close Expressions Web
  • Open IE
  • Go to Tools / Internet Options / Advanced
  • Select "Enable FTP Folder View (outside of Internet Explorer)".
  • De-select "Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility).
  • Restart Expressions Web
  • Voila!

I didn't suggest turning off PASV as I thought you'd already tried that.

You're right, I did. (I should have looked back at my old notes.) Maybe I also deselected the 'enable folder view' option and that perpetuated the problem. Although I usually only make one parameter change at a time, I might not have, as I was getting frustrated.

Anyway, it worked last night, it's still working this morning. I'm a chicken and not going to experiment.

Thanks again,
Andrew
