insert database region in expression web 2? - 6/5/2008 23:26:30
Is there a way to insert database results regions in Expression Web? I recently downloaded a trial version of Expression Web 2 and have been working with it to become familiar with its new features. One major change is that there does not seem to be a database results wizard or an insert database results region option anywhere in the program. I can edit existing database results regions, but cannot find a way to insert them anywhere. This website offers a possible solution: http://www.firstexpression.com/quicktips/free-tools.htm But I tried it and it crashes EW whenever I go to run the file. I think it would be worthwhile to continue to use database results regions. Expression Web is the latest version of Front Page and so would seem to be the only program to enable this type of development. Purchasing the latest version of software can be valuable. It has most of the other features that the old Front Page and some new ones like working with sites that aren’t front page webs.

Hi 2b and welcome to the Outfront Forums, EW is based on .NET controls. To insert a database result similar to Frontpage you would want to insert a Data Grid Control. Here is a link from Outfront that shows a very detailed video of how to do it How To Display a Data Grid

This is how I add Database Results Regions in FrontPage 2002 1. In FrontPage 2002 I go to Insert/Database/Results and then the Database Results Wizard appears. 2. From there I select my database connection which refers to my .mdb file I created in Microsoft Access in my fpdb folder. 3. In the next step of the wizard I select the table in the .mdb file I want to create my database display region or form for. 4. Then I can specify how many results are displayed, what order results are displayed in and which and how many results are displayed. 5. In the final step of the wizard I can choose whether I want to display the results in a list or table or whether I want a search field. 6. Within the database results region that is then displayed I can format the way the text can appear or add a form. I can access an existing Database Results Region with the Database Result Wizard in Expression Web 2 1. In Expression Web 2 I can open an existing web that I created in FrontPage 2002 and then open a page with existing Database Display Regions. 2. When I double click on a display region the Database Results Wizard appears. 3. I can then edit my existing Database Results Region with all of the same options that I have in FrontPage 2002 4. I see no way to insert a new Database Results Region anywhere in Expression Web 2002 5. I cannot figure out how to install FPBotMacro2.bas which says it enables that functionality as described in the link I provided in my last post without it crashing Expression Web 2 when I try to run it. Is there a way to insert Database Display Regions using the Database Display Wizard that exists in Expression Web 2? I looked at the video tutorial recommended in the response to my last post and it does not include the 1st part of that tutorial on how to set up a database connection in Expression Web 2. What is the link to that? Does this tutorial address how to insert Database Results Regions with .mdb files in a fpdb folder or only MySQL databases? I would prefer to work with .mdb files.

You can however use an Access Database for your results. (notice in the video where they select the sqldatasource1......you can choose "New Data Source" instead and then given the option of what type of database where Access is one of the options. Formatting options and so forth are available with EW and Data Grids. In fact, once you become familiar with it, you will see it has MUCH more than what FrontPage offered with Database Results, not to mention much more reliable

2b, I just installed it in EWD2. It didn't crash and works fine. I would however start looking at the asp.net way of doing things. It looks as though that's the future. quote:

Expression Web crashed and crashes every time I run Spooky’s FPBotMacro2.bas after following its instructions that say it will allow someone to insert a database results region with Expression Web after installing it. My Expression Web 2 has not crashed at any other time except when trying to run FPBotMacro2_Setup, yet. Does this file just work with Expression Web and not Expression Web 2? Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution? The description to this add-on says it enables the ability to insert a database results region in Expression Web. Again here is the downloadable file and instructions link: http://www.firstexpression.com/quicktips/free-tools.htm Can I insert a database results region with Expression Web 2 and if so how? The database results wizard opens when I double click on a database results region I created in Front Page 2002 so I know the utility exists. I am not interested in learning an entirely new method of adding databases with Expression Web at this time. I want to insert a database results region using Expression Web 2. Can anyone in this forum or does anyone know anyone that can tell me or show me or provide an application that will allow me to insert a database results region with Expression Web 2? Thank You Very Much, 2b
