how do I? - 6/9/2008 16:54:55
We have an Access DB fed by a small test form on the public Internet server. Works exactly as expected. This is eventually to replace an online reporting function. We now want to build a small web on the Intranet server that goes out to the public server and establishes a connection to that Access DB in order to retrieve and update the posted data, perform analysis, and eventually to send parts of this external data to other internal servers and applications. When I try to set up a database results section is where things are bogging down. It's a NEW database connection, but it is really none of the 4 choices presented. It is an Access DB, just an .mdb file, but unfortunately, it is located on a different server from where the results will be used. The wizard wants the .mdb on the same web, have it be a defined dsn, or have it be an SQL server. How do I set up this new database connection so I can use the data from the public server on the Intranet server. Do I need to set something up on the Intranet server, like a DSN. All ideas and direction gratefully appreciated.

Some additional information and steps taken: I set the properties of the .mdb on the public site I am trying to get to, to allow it to be browsed. (there were 3 choices and this appeared to be the least risk) Then, I tried to set up a DSN from my desktop, thinking if I could do that, I could do the same operation with the internal web server, and thus, have it visible as a system DSN to select in a database results section. Navigating my way through the series of windows it looked like it finally saw the .mdb on the other server, but when I clicked on it as part of the DSN creation, I got this: Microsoft Office is unable to open the data access page. The file you attempted to load was not recognized as HTML. You may have selected the wrong file or are trying to open a database file off of a web server. The DSN creation process fell apart from there. We may not necessarily even want/need to go through this process if there is a better way but I wanted to try it.

It works now. For those trying to set one of these things up, here's what we had to do. To set up a DSN there needs to be a share set up on the public, or target server where the .mdb is located. Since we already had one, we just moved the .mdb into the shared folder. Second, the DSN points to the physical location (share) rather than the web folder. Thus, it is \\server\share, as opposed to http://web location/web folder. Once all that got straightened out the DSN set up fine.
