How to re-install extensions - 12/11/2001 10:58:15
I've seen a number of recommendations to re-install the extensions in order to correct certain site misbehaviors attributed to extension corruption. I'm not clear on what this involves. I'm assuming that this means the extensions associated with the site in question and not the global package (e.g. Q280322i.EXE which installs FP2000 extensions release 1.2). If that's the case, I'm guessing that you'd go into MMC on the server, right-click on the site, select All Tasks, and remove the extensions by choosing Convert Server Extensions Web to Directory. Extensions would be re-applied by right-clicking on the site directory, selecting All Tasks then Configure Server Extensions and stepping through the resulting wizard. I have further questions about this process, if indeed it is the correct one: 1) DELETION OF EXTENSIONS http://1awebhosting.com/manual/chapter7.html states that the old extensions have to be deleted first otherwise the corruption persists after extensions are re-applied. How would this be done - by deleting the underscore-prefixed folders and their contents once the web is converted to a directory? 2) LOSS OF FRONTPAGE FORMATTING When you select Convert Server Extensions Web to Directory, you are presented with this warning: "Changing this web into a folder will cause pages in it to change: - Their themes may change to match the parents web's theme - Only people with access to the parent web will be able to access these pages - Entries in the navigation bar for these pages will be lost - The to do list for these pages will be lost Are you sure you want to do this?" I'm led to believe that this is not an issue if, once the site has been converted to a directory then back to a web, you can publish the site back to the server from a copy at another location (your workstation, other server). If however the site on the server is the only copy in existence, just how much of a problem does this loss pose? Is it potentially a lot of work to recover what could be lost? 3) ALIASES What do you do in MMC if, in addition to the site listing under Default Web Site, you also have an alias defined? Would you have to re-install its extensions as well, starting with Remove Server Extensions from the All Tasks submenu for the alias? Wage Slave

A couple of questions: 1) What kind of server OS are you using? (Apache, hopefully...) 2) Do you have any subwebs? Yes, delete the associated site extensions and not the globals. No, you don't mess with the actual web pages and directories, they contain ALL the information you'll need once the extensions are re-applied. do NOT delete them. the "_vti" etc. files should be left alone. Yes, you will lose extensions-dependent page functions for the short time you delete the extensions, but when you re-install them the functions will re-appear. Item #2: You are correct. Normally the deletion of extensions and re-installation does not pose a problem, especially on an Apache swerver, but if you are on NT or other Windows server, DEFINITELY back up on your local HD before you go down the deletion road. Item 3#: I'm not sure I understand your alias question... Be not afraid. It's not as imposing as it looks. Microsoft purposely makes it sound as if the earth will shift on it's axis to delete extensions, but it's no big deal. RE: How to re-install extensions - 12/12/2001 11:34:22
Thanks for the info. I'm running FP2000 extensions on an NT4.0 server. They've worked very smoothly (knock on wood) over the 14 months they've been active and currently host 100 sites. There are no nested subwebs involved but I'd guess that you'd move up the hierarchy of nested subwebs when deleting extensions then move down the hierarchy when re-applying the extensions. With regards to the alias issue, all sites have an entry under Default Web Site in MMC which translates into address http://fpserveralias/mysite/. Some site owners request a custom alias like http://mycustomalias/ for the same site. Our ICN group will map the custom alias to the server's IP address but then I have to create a new Web Site in MMC to point the alias to the actual site. The result is that there are two MMC entries (one under Default Web Site and one at the same level as Default Web Site) that run FP extensions and point to the same site. My questions are: - If one is corrupt, does that mean that both are corrupt? - How do you remove and re-install extensions for a custom alias Web Site? Note that the All Tasks menu option for a Default Web Site entry is "Convert Server Extensions Web to Directory" but for the custom alias the closest All Tasks option is "Remove Server Extensions". Is there any significant difference? Thanks again. Wage Slave
