Blue-Ray DVD Burner - 6/21/2008 13:09:39
Gotta be the first kid on my block to spring for a Blue-Ray DVD Burner but confused with selections and the wide range of (very pricey) pricing. We have a Sony PS3 and a subscription to Netflix so my usage would be confined to copying (er... correcting problems) from Blue-Ray discs using AnyDVD/CloneDVD2 software sold by www.slysoft.com (which works fine on regular DVD's and purports the same experience with Blue-Ray with the release of version 6.4.5.0). I'm circling around: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136137 but the technology/terminology is so new I need any help/recommendations I can get. BTW, I'm running a pretty resource heavy XP Pro machine so I think I'm OK there. Thanks as usual

That one does HD DVD and Blu-ray, so if you were one of those people who bought a bunch of HD DVDs, you will be able to watch them too. Are you sure you want to spend the money on this kind of setup? The hard drive requirements for Blu-ray DVDs are crazy. It's almost worth it to copy Blu-ray to Blu-ray instead of going directly to the hard drive to watch later or store for a backup. I still think the Blu-ray players/burners are still way too expensive for me to go buy one, especially since I already own a PS3. Also, if you plan to watch them from your computer to your HD TV, you will lose out on quality. The standard connection a lot of the higher end video cards have, send a 480p signal to your TV (even with component). I haven't looked around recently, however, there may be a way to send a full 1080p signal to your HD TV now. As far as the Blu-ray players go for computers, that drive seems to have great reviews for that price range. Here's a cheaper place to get it from for $259.99 shipped Don't forget, you need a free SATA connection for this drives. It's not like the normal DVD drives that simply plug in via IDE. I haven't personally tested AnyDVD HD on a Blu-ray disc, so I don't know how well it works. I have noticed that there are quite a few updates on AnyDVD HD this past month for the Blu-ray stuff.

Yeah, the technology isn't ready for that right now. I stopped backing up my DVDs recently because of all the Blu-ray movies that are coming out. I added a few more hard drives to handle backups, but haven't really put them to use much. Hard drive space is going to be much cheaper than the actual Blu-ray discs. You won't be able to transfer the Blu-ray signal though, so no reason to even bother with doing that right now. If you end up going through with things and decide you want to spend the money on the actual Blu-ray setup, I may be able to save you some $$ on the actual Blu-ray discs (you would have to buy in bulk though).

I'm saying your computer has no way to output a true 1080p signal to a video source. One reason why I back everything up to my computer, is because I can output a 480p signal to my TV via my video card. You can still back up from blu-ray disc to hard drive to blu-ray disc, which should play fine in the PS3. If you are wanting to store the blu-ray on your drive, and try to play it via the PS3, you may have trouble trying to install the program required to play it. By default, the PS3 can't read the source files of a blu-ray disc. PowerDVD can read the actual DVD files, so you're able watch a DVD simply by selecting the files, the standard video players don't even know it is a DVD.
