Should I move to Expression Web? - 6/23/2008 19:38:22
I am still using FrontPage 2002, even though I bought Expression Web about 6 months ago. I've continued to use FrontPage 2002 because I'm familiar with it and it has been reliable for me (except for a problem that I encountered today - but that's another story that I'll post on another forum). I hold a copy of my web site on my PC. It has about 10,000 pages. I publish the site regularly to my host, using FrontPage. I publish just the changed pages (comparing the dates of the pages). Usually just a few pages are published and it takes about a minute. QUESTON 1: I tried, just once, to open the same web on my PC and publish changes using Expression Web, but the computer started to publish what looked as if it was going to be thousands of pages, so I cancelled the job and went back to using FrontPage 2002. Does anybody know why this might have happened? It might be worth going ahead with the Publishing of thousands of pages now , in the hope that next time I use Expression Web to publish changes, it will publish just a few pages. But before I try Expression Web again, I'm intersted in the answer to the question below. QUESTION 2: Can I start making changes to update the web site with Expression Web rather than FrontPage now, treating Expression Web just as if it is an updated version of FrontPage? If I do that, will the site still work OK, or must I first make some changes to the site first to enable Espression Web to work. e.g. Will it continue to use top and bottom borders, styles, etc. in the same way as these are used at present? - Pete Stubbs

Hi: It's Peter again. I see that 46 people have read my post but nobody has replied yet. I think there must have been lots of people who have made the move from using Front Page to using Expression Web on the same site (with or without having problems?) Has that move been easy for people. If nobody has answered because the question I have asked is not clear, please let me know and I'll try to explain it better. Thanks. - Peter

I'll give it a stab... #1 - I would guess it needs to publish them all again because EW probably need to know internally what's been published or not, and can't, or doesn't use, whatever FP used. #2 - I jumped right into EW from FP without a hitch. Everything worked flawlessly from FP to EW. BUT, I don't use DRW or DIW (whatever it is called) or Extensions. I used FP, and now EW, simply as an editor and to keep my stuff organized a bit. I do use ASP and Database stuff and then use FTP my files to the server. I do publish locally though to my localhost path. I like EW better all around, and the move was painless.

Hi Brian: Thanks for your reply. That's very helpful. It's just the sort of info that I was looking for, so now I expect to move to ExpressionWeb within the next few days. Your #1: That makes sense to me. Thanks. Your #2: That's just the sort of answer I was looking for. So now I hope to start using ExpressionWeb within the next few days. You'll see from my comments below that my technical knowledge is rather limited! However here is my response to what you wrote: I don't know how much of the following is relevant! I'm not sure what DRW (or DIW) is, so I expect that I don't use that. When I set up the web site, initially, I used some features of FP Extensions; in particular for searching the site, counting the number of visitors to the site and the guestbook. However, I've now found better ways to include these features so I don't use FP Extensions for them. I cannot think of any other way that I use FP Extensions unless the following count as using FP Extensions. I rely on FP for providing top and bottom borders and page styles. I can't remember how I set those up. It was a long time ago. But I know that I used some features of FP to set them up. I'm not sure what ASP is, but I do know what databases are and my web site does not use them. I keep a copy of the web site on my own PC and that's the copy that I update daily. I then use front page 'publish' to send updates of the site to my host FastHosts, usually several times a day. This is my web site: www.edinphoto.org.uk - Peter

Hi Peter, From looking at the source code on your home page it looks like you should be okay. I don't see any FP extension code in there. And, if there was, I believe EW leaves it alone unless you go to update that specific field or extension's logic. ASP is an acronym for Active Server Pages. It's a scripting language that is run on the server. Using it or not would not affect going from FP to EW. From the looks of it, you should be fine with the upgrade to EW.

Hi Brian: Thanks again for your reply, and particularly for the time that you have taken to look at the source code on my home page. Your comments are very helpful to me. I appreciate them. - Peter
