I cannot include my recently uploaded pictures in my we... - 6/23/2008 20:00:03
I've been adding pictues to my web site for several years without any problem, until today.

BUT the pictures that I added to the site today are not working. These pictures appear together with all the earlier pictures, as I would exect, in the appropriate folders when I open the folders list in the FrontPage.

But if I try to add them to a page on my web site by selecting them from a folder, I have a problem. When I open the folder to select them, I find that they are not listed.

- I've tried renaming the photos that I've added today.
- I've tried adding more photos.
- I've tried closing and re-opening FrontPage
- I've tried rebooting the PC
- I've tried typing the name of the jpg file into ther field to add it to a page on
the web site, rather than select the image from the list (that it does not appear on) butI just get the box with an 'x' inside and no image displayed.

None of these has worked. But if I try to add photos from earlier to different web pages, then that works fine.

- I've tried to recalculate hyperlinks. The job is running now and I may have to wait until the morning to see the result of that. (I have about 10,000 pages on my web site, so the job is likely to take a while to run.)

I hope somebody can suggest how I can solve the problem above.

- Peter.

My guess: Memory or lack thereof. Try: Ctrl/Alt/Delete and click on the Processes Tab. With 10,000 pages + graphics the "Mem Usage" is bound to be high.

For instance, I just called-up a 50 page site in FrontPage and the Memory Usage (FRONTPG.EXE) is listed as 16,876 KB. By comparison, IE7 is the current heavy user at 39,940 kb. The Big Guy when loaded is Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 at 74,000 kb.

Hi Larry:

Thanks for your comments. I did the Ctl/Alt/Del and clicked on the Process Tab as you suggested, when I was using FrontPage, but found that the memory usage was not particularly high: 43,492K for FrontPage and 46,204K for Internet Explorer.

Here's the progress that I've made since yesterday in solving my problem with the pictures:

- Running 'Recalculate Hyperlinks' did not help.
- So I tried putting the FP disk in the PC and running 'Detect & Repair' - still the same.
- So I un-installed FrontPage 2002 and re-installed it - still the same.

I then tried to update the site using ExpressionWeb. That program found the pictures that I had recently added to the web site, and I was able to add them to the appropriate pages in the web site!

(Previously, I have been reluctant to move from FrontPage to ExpressionWeb which I boutht a few monts ago, because I was concerned that updating the site or publishing it using ExpressionWeb might upset the site in some way - and all was working well, until this week!)

I'm still trying. without success, to use FrontPage 2002 to include imges that I recently added to the web site on new pages that I am adding to the site.
As I mentioned yesterday, FrontPage is showing these jpg files in the appropriate folder on the folders list, but when I try to 'add picture from file' the files that it lists for me to select from do not include these recent images.

Do you have any idea what might be the cause of this?

- Peter.

While in FP, on your computer, open the images folder that you have put those images into and press F5. If that doesn't show the images than they are not there.

Hi Treetopsranch:

Thanks for the advice.

In fact, I have discovered that the photos are certainly there. Please see below for explanation.

When I try to add one of the pictures to a page on the web site, I get the folder list but with the recent pictures missing (as I mentioned earlier).

However if I type the name of one of the 'missing' pictures into the field (i.e. the field where a picture that I selected would go if I selected it from the list) then the computer seems to have no problem in finding the picture and adding it to the page for me.

I just don't know why it does not appear on the list with all the other pictures!

What is the file name extension of the images that don't show up?

Hi Don:

The file name extension is '.jpg'.
That's the same file name extension as I have for thousands of other photos on my web site. They all show up well on the list when I do insert>picture>from file.

Here s an example:

If you open this page then look at 'Route 26', you'll find 8 thumbnail images.
If I try insert>picture>from file>0_edin_t, then the four thumbnails on the left are listed in the list of files, but not the four on the right that I added to the site more recently.

http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_edin_t/0_edinburgh_transport_-_buses_termini.htm#26

The larger pictures that are obtained by clicking on the thumbnail images act the same way. i.e.
i.e. If I try insert>picture>from file>0_edin_t, then thelarger images corresponding to the four thumbnails on the left are listed in the list of files, but not the larger images corresponding to the four thumbnails on the right.

Lets try another solution. You said in the first post that the photos were not in the expected folder. Later post you said they were there but could not be seen when doing the insert photo thing. Is that correct? If yes, then try to recreate one of those photos in your favorite photo program and save it in the correct folder as a .jpg. Then reopen FP and try to insert that photo. I'm guessing here that those problem photos are corrupted somehow and by recreating them you may fix the problem.

Your folder and page naming conventions are a little weird with underlines and zeros and dashes. Just use plain words with no extra stuff. Don't take offense but it is really hard to track down problems when you have folders that have unneeded characters and you can easily make a mistake in saving pages to those folders. Zeros look a lot like the letter O for instance.

Hi Don:

Thanks for your latest two posts.

Your message posted at 6/25/2008 23:06:08

The #26 is one of many bookmarks that I have on the page. It opens the page at the appropriate place, rather than leaving the viewer to scroll down the page to find the appropriate place when they use the link. These bookmarks work well.

1. Sorry, my first post was a bit ambiguous. My later posting tells the story better. i.e. "The photos are there, but cannot be seen when doing the insert photo thing.". Earlier this week, I tried various combinations of re-naming the photos and re-opening FrontPage. This did not solved, but there is more that I can do along those lines, if necessary. It looks to me as if some sort of lindexing to these files has not worked correctly, but the photos themselves seem not to be corrupted, as they are now displaying fine on the web site.

2. Thanks for your comments on the naming of my files. I agree that it may look a little wierd, but it follows a convention that works for me, and I'm the only person who updates the web site! Here, in case you are interested, is a brief explanation:

- most of the files on my web site begin with 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. depending on the topic.
- I've used '_ 'to separate words because I read somewhere that some programs don't like to find file names with spaces in them.
- The other spacing that I have used is '_-_' to separate one group of words within a file name from another. That's not really necessary!

I'm not suggesting that anybody else should follow the naming convention above but it works for me, and I thought I'd let you know the logic of it.

LATEST NEWS:

For the past two days I've been adding more photos to the web site. They are working well, and I have been able to find them when I've done the 'insert photo'. So it's only the photos that I added on one day earlier in the week (about 30) that cannot be seen when I do 'insert photo'.

If the program continues to work for future photos that I add, I think I'll forget about the problem above and not investigate it any further..

Thanks for your help.

PROBLEM FOUND - BUIT NOT SOLVED

I think I've found why FrontPage has not been listing all the pictures I expect when I've done 'include>picture>from file'.

Until recently, I kept my web site on my F drive, and did all the updating to the site on that drive, then publish the site from there.
Recently, I copied the site to my C drive. I now do all the updating to the site on C and then publish it from there.
I stilll have a copy of the site on the F drive for back up purposes.

Here's what has been happening.
While working on the site on the C drive, and doing 'include>picture>from file' the computer has gone to the F drive to find the pictures to list for me. (This seems to have been happening sometimes but not always, and I don't know why.)

Everything else (including the list of files in folders on the web site) seems to be using the copy of the web site on the C drive as I would expect.

If anybody can suggest what I can do to get FrontPage to always look at the copy of the web site that it is updating (i.e. the copy on the C drive) when I do 'include>picture>from file' that would be good.

Thanks for your help.

- Peter.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Thanks for your earlier comments. I've now solved the problem!

Once I realised that 'include>pictures>from file' was looking in my F drive for the pictures, I realised that while I was displaying the list of pictures that it found, I was able to navigate up to to 'my computer' then back down again to the copy of my web site on my C drive. I did that then inserted the photo that I needed.

Now, whenever I want to insert a photo, the 'include>pictures>from file' looks where I want it to (in the C drive).
