Changed computers, trying to get FP reconnected with site - 6/25/2008 12:33:08
Hi
We are stymied here.

We have a website made in FP. Been online for years.
Recently changed computers. Loaded the FP program onto the new one, but cannot get reconnected with the site in a working fashion.

What we had was a local copy of the website on the hard drive, we'd work with it in FP, then publish the changes. We have tried various things, but cannot get back to that state of affairs.

Tried to follow wizards and such; tried workarounds with WS-FTP. No usable results so far.

Can someone lay out the steps for us?

Thank you

Welcome to Outfront,

Maybe a little bit more info on exactly was is happening.

1. Is a local copy of the site on the New Computer? If so, when you try to open it what happens?

2. If trying to open up site live from server to Backwards Publish what happens when you try to open up the site?

Hello and thanks for your speedy interest.

I, the writer here, am very confused in general by FP. I use Dreamweaver, HTML, and WS-FTP. My wife uses FP, but she is less into reading the instructions than just messing around until things work. So it may take some input from her to answer your specific questions. Here, however, are more details on the problem.

[This is copied from a post I made in a whole 'nother forum, where people are looking at it but not answering].

-----

Let me describe what I would do in Dreamweaver and FS-FTP, and then see if y'all can tell me how to do it in FP.

I would load DW and FS-FTP on the new computer. I would create a folder for the site on my C drive. I would enter the FTP address of my site in WS-FTP (I don't use the internal upload/download function of DW) and download the whole site to the folder. Then I would open DW, go to "Create New Site," name it, and tell it where the folder is. Then I would use the command "Recreate Site Files" and DW would run through the files and then show them as a tree or diagram. After that, I could open the local site in DW, work on it, and upload changes through WS-FTP.

We tried to do this with my wife's site (www.darrowby.com). We could get as far as entering the FTP address in FP, and then it would log on and show us the files online. But we could not get it to download a copy to the hard drive. Eventually I downloaded it through WS-FTP, and tried to recreate the site in the FP program. No go, however.
My wife, after messing with it, says she can get it working if she goes through every page and re-enters all the links. She is now engaged in that. Laborious --- big site. It does seem to be slowly recreating the diagram of the site. Dunno about the dependent files. But I do not know why (or if) this is working, or if she will be able to get back to working on pages and uploading changes as before.

-----

I guess there might be answers to your questions in there. I also guess that "Backwards Publish" sounds like a direction to go in. Not something I am familiar with, maybe my wife is.

Lemme know how I can get more specific, here, and thanks again.

Aarrgghh.
"While you were sleeping...."
Apparently my wife managed to get the site to download to the hard drive, then she went through that business of re-entering all the links between pages, and now she can in fact open the "web" in FP and work with it.

Wish this state of things had been shared with me.....

So now the problem is, it won't publish the changes back to the server.

I suppose I'll go start a new thread on this question.

But I am curious why she had to do that with the links, if anyone knows.

Thanks for your attention to this (I guess solved, sorta) problem.

by backward publishing with FP?......and when you say you can not publish back to server, are you supplying the username and password. Try opening up the site live within FP.

1. Go to FILE>>OPEN SITE

2. In folder name window type in your domain "http://www.mydomain.com"

3. It should prompt you for username and password....type in both

4. Site should then open and this would be the version on the Server. You could then backward publish back to your hard drive.

Hello again, Swoosh
Actually, I got somewhere with downloading today myself.
Mind you, one of the things that gets me crazy about FP is the "proprietary language." I was looking in Help for "download" and found nothing. Apparently it is called Publishing. Or Backward Publishing.
Anyway, I noted some post on this forum under "similar threads" and tried it and (I guess) backward published the site into a folder.

Whether it is all there and in order I do not know, because I cannot suss out how FP arranges files. For that matter, I don't know where it keeps them! The reason I cannot just upload my wife's new work with regular FTP is that I cannot locate the files on the hard drive. Really, I put one of them into Search (on the Start button on the desktop) and it couldn't find it!

Perhaps I have digressed....or ranted.

OK, it seemed to download. So why does it claim it can't connect to upload?

Anyway, I will get her to try what you've said. I don't want to mess with her process or filing system. We did try to fill in the wizard you mention, but it did not work.

Now, there may be an issue or six there ---- when it wanted the location we wanted to publish to we tried www.darrowby.com, the URL, and also ftp.osiriscomm.com, the FTP address I use in WS-FTP. Maybe we should have used http://www.darrowby.com? We'll try that.

The wizard also asked us for the path on the server, and I put in what WS-FTP seems to say it is, but I'm not sure about that. And, of course, username and password. But we got the messages I reported above.

Well, wife out of commission for the night, but we'll try the wizard again tomorrow.

I also have an e-mail out to the host, to see if they know how to set this up.
I'm almost sure it is a matter of filling in the right things in the right places, but I wish it were not so opaque to me.

Thanks again,
Flatcat47

Yes, when you try to open the site via FP by going to FILE>>OPEN SITE you must use the http://

Well, we have OFFICIALLY GIVEN UP.
Even our very able host techs could not get our version of FP 98 to upload to the website. They speculate that it may have been a fluke that the old program was still communicating with their server at all.

Figure the old FP is obsolete.

Have purchased the upgrade to Expressions, and certainly hope that when that arrives it installs nicely, upgrades in fact, and that we can understand it, and it will align with the extant website.

Lot of hopes?

Thanks for your consideration of the problem.
