FP plug-in for EW - Will webbots always work - 7/14/2008 12:38:27
I have download and installed the webbot macro

Here is my question - I thought the FP extensions were going away - Thus, if I built a site using webbots for a client will it always work?

Thanks

They will work as long as the host server has them installed and if they are functioning properly (a big IF).
That does not preclude the possibility that some future release of the server software won't allow backwards compatibility with the extensions.
A better take on the subject is this--if you use server extensions for, lets say, a form, and the extensions go down, then the form will continue to be visible on the web page but will not function.
So how do you know the form is malfunctioning?
Well, usually when a user takes the time to email you that the form isn't working properly.
The opportunity to have a non-working website page for a long duration without knowing it is why we would never use webbots..period...

Seems to me that if Microsoft wanted you to continue using bots they'd have built them in to EW. They didn't.

Server extensions are no longer supported. Some hosts still run them, many don't.

Take a long term view of your sites. Do you want them to continue working in the long term? If yes, then start getting to grips with native EW now and get the sites changed to botless BEFORE you're forced to.

Some bots will work without extensions like the 'include' bot but to be safe you should heed Jaybee's advice.

I agree regarding the bots. I still like the FP publish extension and use it because if my host removes FP extensions switching to ftp will not be a big deal.
