Email Puzzle - 7/22/2008 6:15:56
Can anyone explain how this works...

My client has come with an existing domain name and three custom email addresses using that name.

Their Outlook settings are as follows:

incoming: pop3.their-normal-isp.com
outgoing: smtp.their-normail-isp.com
account name: info@their-own-domain-name.com ???

I don't understand - normally if one is using a custom email address then the mail would be incoming from their own domain (outgoing can be either of course).

Can anyone tell me how things are working here?

Is the isp BTconnect? It looks like it, if so the email is all directed through BT's domain servers and the customers own domain name address is an alias which is set up on the BT site. We use it at work and it is a pain.

Bing!

Yes, the pop and smtp are btclick.com.

Thanks for clarifying this.

Is there a way I can point the domain to my hosting without in any way affecting the current email status?

As I understand it it shouldn't make any difference. If you're not sure then get your client to contact BT. Effectively they whitelist the domain as a valid email route. Without it you get blocked and yes, it's a pain.

hmm, I'm struggling to reconcile this at the moment...

Now, at present the domain name is with 1&1 (and I assume it is still set to the default 1&1 name servers too). So if someone addresses an email to info@their-own-domain-name.com I presume it heads to 1&1 and is then 'forwarded' to BT - right?

OK, so then they collect the mail from pop.btclick.com - this I can understand.

Then they SEND an email via smtp.btclick.com and this is where BT have provided a special facility for outgoing mail to look as if it has come from their own domain - is this right?

Now, if I was to change name servers to rick's-hosting-package.etc then I assume that their email would come to my server - and I would need to set-up a redirect there to send it to BT - no? - yes?

:)

With BT you need to get the client to ring up BT and get an email relay set up - they basically get them to list their website as "allowed" (as Jaybee says) then you can use your email settings instead of BTs for the incoming one.
