working with database - 7/22/2008 21:55:30
Hi,

I'm bidding on a new web job that involves a database and payment system...the extent of my database work so far is with blogs.

This site involves people paying annually for a service that puts their information into a database. Then anyone can access the database for their information.

I don't know if the client's payment system has a subscription feature like paypal or not; if it doesn't can the database be configured with a due date?? And...basically what would be the best practice in setting this up? I have FP 2003 and expression.

Any advice is appreciated...thanks, Sharon

My advice would be don't expect FP or EW to do this for you and given that you only have experience of working with blogs, which I assume are scripts you installed and tweaked, I wouldn't attempt to do this from scratch yourself unless the client has no particular deadline and is willing to wait as long as it takes.

I suggest you got take a good look through www.hotscripts.com to see if there's something ready built you can use.

Thanks....would it be better to use something like joomla? Or would the database portion be something I should consider hiring out?

Thanks again,
Sharon

I think Joomla is overkill for this unless you want to build the entire site as a CMS.

Hotscripts will, udner the ASP or PHP scripts section, have a load available which are likely to suit you more. They are categorised by function so have a good look through. You may even find an easy install script that all you need to do is template out. Usually these things have routines to build the database for you. Some are even free!
