please review how to make rc airplanes - 7/23/2008 18:54:06
Hello,
my name is carl baer and i have recently put up a site that sells a book about building rc airplanes. i have written a large amount of sales copy for the site. I would like any suggestions about the content and the layout of the site.
did it compel you to buy, what did you like about the content.
what did you really get turned off by.
any changes you would recommend?
Any type of comment pos. or neg. is most welcome.
thanks for viewing,

The pop-up ad as soon as you hit the site is really annoying and would make me leave instantly. If people have come to your site they've come to look for info not to have that shoved in their face. It smacks of desperation.

The menu link text is far too small

There's too much text on the front page. Put some of it on another page, people will get fed up halfway down so all the info at the bottom will be missed, or they'll scroll down and miss the middle bit.

Aaaargh! Every single page pops that damn ad up. You do realise people like you are the reason pop-up blockers were developed. Many visitors will have them switched on too.

I'm not one to critique, since I don't do much of the design parts of sites, but I had a couple minutes and looked.

I'm with Jaybee... Ugh. Kill the pop-up! Also, there must be some template out there or something. This looks just like one of those "get rich quick sites" or "as seen on tv" or something. That first page is way too looooong. But hey, maybe this type of format works for selling to your audience. Doesn't seem to work for me. You signature on the page looks doesn't look like a signature but more like you drew it with your mouse. Maybe sign and scan it in?

Too much underlining, text size changing, and highlighting etc. The header and coloring works for me.

Take a look at it in FireFox too. Stuff is broken.

It's a little odd having the layout right aligned (FF) not comfortable to view.

I totally agree - the popup is a menace and it's not just on the homepage - it's on every page!!

The issue I have is that surely someone inexperienced in building remote controlled aircraft would buy a kit? As they become more experienced with kits why would they need to buy your book?

I'd be more impressed with a site that actually explained it all on the site itself and relied on adverts to earn money than these sort of download guides - but then that would take a fair amount of upkeep and input and I guess that's probably the point - build it and leave it to earn money? I'm not convinced it will...

Technically you've got a load of coding errors in there (some markup is even showing through on the page). Does that matter? Well to people like me it does but I'd have thought that it might put buyers off - why trust you to have a reliable technical guide to something if you can't build the website properly? I know they're not related subjects but still...

I may be wrong but this looks remarkably like something a friend of Harv's has just got herself into. There's some guy who sells a package of 23, I think it was 23, websites and access to loads of e-books. The idea being you take a subject you're interested in, extract the info from the book and then set up one of your 23 sites with that info which you sell as an e-book.

I had my doubts when she was telling me about it, especially when she then went on to explain about the additional stuff you could buy such as the guaranteed Google placements. :) I told her not to touch that until I've looked at it for her.

In theory this could work but, BIG BUT, not with the sites the way they are. They look like all the other get rich quick e-book sites that everyone hits and leaves. The pop-ups make that even more likely.

My take on this is, and I've told Harv's friend the same thing, you've invested cash into this and you need a return. As far as I can see the best way to do that is, by all means whack up 23 sites, you never know, you might get some return. However, pick one subject you're passionate about, a subject where you can support people with queries, and set up an amazing site for it that people will want to visit. Add a forum for them to talk to each other and you. Provide amazing service and sell the book off the back of that.
