Frustrating Permissions Problem (fixed) - 7/23/2008 22:13:14
I uploaded the Facebook PHP client library onto my server, but before I could even run the sample application, I was stopped by a strange error. I'm posting this here as it seems to be more of a permissions problem than a Facebook one.

When I try to view any file within the folder I uploaded ('facebook-platform'), even if it is just a simple script that calls phpinfo(), I get a 403 error ('Forbidden You don't have permission to access /facebook-platform/ on this server.') This happens no matter what permissions I set for the files & folders (eg 744).
The server's error log says this: '.../facebook-platform/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable' even when there is a perfectly readable .htaccess file.

Files in other directories on my server work fine, even if there is no .htaccess file in that folder.

I've been trying to fix this for a couple of hours and I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Edit: Fixed

After much tinkering I happened upon the right combination of permissions. Apparently my server won't let you set anything to writable by group or world, and I had left some directory set like this. Still don't know what it had to do with htaccess files, though...
