HDD temperature - 7/24/2008 11:55:49
This one's a follow-on really from my recent post about my troublesome aging laptop that's been making strange noises. As I think I've mentioned previously, I've noticed recently that parts of the casing seem to get very warm (particularly down the left-hand side for some reason), and that and strange noises more and more are leading me to think that probably all's not well with the cooling fans. I'm bringing forward my planned purchase of a new laptop though and I'll probably order one in the next week or so, yesterday though I installed some software that displays the HDD temp in the system tray so I don't have to go hunting around for it, so I could keep an eye on the temperature.

Yesterday it was hovering around 40 degrees most of the day. Today it's gone from 30-35 for the first couple of hours and is now hovering around 38 degrees. Can anyone tell me what the normal/safe HDD for a laptop would be, and should I be overly concerned if it's hovering around 40 degrees?

Just had a quick shufti on Google and found this but it really depends on the manufacturer. From here Igot

Most laptop computers operate properly in the safe temperature range of 50 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 to 35 degrees Celsius...

Elsewhere someone reduced the temperature by blowing air into the cooling vents which dislodged a whole load of dust and muck - obviously the laptop was not on. :)

Those temps are nothing to worry about. I have drives that run 50+ with zero issues. A drive any higher than 65, might have a cooling problem. Drives are made to withstand 100+ degrees, but that doesn't mean they will run like that forever.

Let me know if you need any AV for the laptop, I have a couple licenses for NOD32, BitDefender, and Kaspersky.

Thanks - that's reassuring. It's still getting replaced asap though (probably Novatech Caz, as they do 9 months interest free credit which'll allow me to save up the rest of my pennies :) ) I did give all the vents and stuff a good clean a few weeks ago (it's amazing what rubbish gets under the keys you find when you get the hoover nozzle on it! :)) and I use an Akasa cooling fan thingy with it (stops my legs getting over-heated :)) though Novatech do a totally lovely looking one with nice blue lights....mmmmm......:)

Blue lights, huh? You know you really don't have to buy up everything blue on the planet :)
We just got an LCD TV from Novatech, their own brand, good value and we have reclaimed a massive amount of floor space too. You don't realise just how massive a footprint the old CRT TVs had until they are gone. However watching "28 weeks later" in all it's gory detail was just a little too much for me...:)

Nah, I don't buy all of it. I leave some for Taz cos I know he likes his blue stuff as well. :)
