Suddenly can't publish - 12/12/2001 1:20:51
After six months of zero publishing problems, all of a sudden tonight I can't get through to my server. Since the last time I was successful, I published my family page to a non-FP extensions server, so I had toggled extensions on and off in FP. However, it was definitely toggled on again tonight. The other thing I installed was the Cisco VPN client. I HAVE been able to upload to the family site tonight, so I don't think the VPN client is the problem. The error I get is 1/ it prompts again for the password, then 2/ I get a message that the ftp session has been terminated, then 3/ I get a message that no website exists at that location, do I wish to create one? The password is correct. Username is correct. ISP says that THEY can login to the site and the site IS still on the net. Is there anything I could have done in FP that could have caused this? HELP!

I would delete _private and _vti* folders..
make sure to get rid of them in sub folders too. From Published Site..
Ask ISP to reinstall Extension if u can't yourself, then publishing should be back to norm..the appear to be corrupted!

Thanks, but I just want to make sure I have this right. Delete those folders from the published site only? Or from both?

PS to this...looking at the hidden folders on FP, there is no _.vti folder. Could this be my problem? (What IS the _.vti folder?)

I can't get into my site even using another FTP program, although the ISP (Earthlink) folks say they have no problem logging on to it. <?>

Okay, one more piece to the puzzle. I was able to logon via an FTP program from my office, but not from FP on my primary computer at home or from my FTP program on a laptop at home. So, what's different between home and office?

Only two things left that the primary home computer and the laptop have in common. I have a Linksys router at home and my local ISP just changed from Excite@home to ATTBi. Again, I HAVE been able to upload to my non-FP-extensions ATTBi family webpage, just not to the FP-friendly .org site I manage via Earthlink.

Any detectives out there that can help me with this??? THANKS!

-Steve

THE ANSWER (PARTIALLY): It's ATT Broadband, which is apparently blocking the ability to manage websites hosted on non-ATT Broadband servers. At least, that is the evidence. I'm still trying to get through to their abysmal "support" folks to find out exactly what is being blocked and what they may or may not be planning to do about it.

Can you change your tcp/ip dns properties on your home computer to go through a different one?

also sometimes the proxy settings on my @home account mysteriously get changed and then I cannot get in to my sites via FP.

I've never used a proxy with either @home or @attbi. The DNS question was an interesting one. I shuffled the deck of my DNS servers and still came up short.

However, late this afternoon I had a long discussion with my company technical consultant (a very, very senior level tech guru) and he reports that he is also no longer able to manage his non-attbi-hosted site while using attbi cable. And several of his other clients are now reporting FTP failures since the Excite>ATTBI changeover.

What does tracrt say? I still think it's DNS. Isn't there a way to exclude a server from the DNS path?

hey, need a break? http://webpages.charter.net/cwind/SSGallery/indexFP.htm

I'll run a tracert when I get home tonight & also take the attbi DNS servers off the system entirely I have a few other working DNS's that I can use. I did try to plug in the actual earthlink ftp IP address last night, but didn't get anywhere.
Very frustrating...but thanks for the suggestions!!! I'll keep you posted, -Steve
