HELP -- Can't publish via FTP - CAN with FP xtions inst... - 8/5/2008 17:59:25
Hello!

I just created a very simple (one-page) site from scratch, using one of the templates included in EW software. I am now trying to publish via the FTP process (my host account is with GoDaddy).

Some folders and files published fine, but when it comes to default.htm and master.dwt, it stalls and gives me an error message "Could not a Web server "chiropracticdomainnames.com" at Port 21 ..."

I had a friend try it on his computer and it seemed to work fine!

After trying everything else I could think of, I had FP extensions installed on the server and tried to publish the site again, this time, choosing the "FrontPage Server Extensions" publishing type. It published perfectly.

I suppose I could just continue publishing via the FP method but I am really trying to wean myself away from FP and FP server extensions, so I think it's important for me to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I'm using Windows XP home; with ExWeb 12.0.6211.1000 with service pack 1 installed. I have a wired LAN connection (which appears to be working perfectly) and TrendMicro firewall/virus security (FTP outgoing set to ALLOW).

Can anyone think of something for me to try? I really would appreciate all the help I can get.

If you FTP now you do realise that it will harm the FPSE on your site and you will probably need to redo everything?

I am not familiar with your host's requirements but if you do want to switch to using FTP rather than using the inbuilt FTP try using Filezilla for the job. It might make a difference.

Yes, try turning off the Trend Micro firewall while FTP'ing and see if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions ... I've tried turning TrendMicro off but it still wouldn't work using the FTP settings.

Finally -- after looking all over the internet for other suggestions -- I found a post on the EW support forum that suggested switching to active FTP rather than passive and VOILA! It worked. I'm not sure WHY it worked, unless GoDaddy is one of those servers that require active FTP.

I am going to try to uninstall my FPSE and see if things still work.

Thank goodness this was just a simple "test site" and not something complex and important!
