Gone as far as a novice can go...Help Wanted - 8/8/2008 11:51:14
I started in FrontPage then edited my pages further in ExpressionWeb. Self taught (and obvious :)) up to this point. A class I found isn't offered in this area isn't for another month and I'm stumped on the user interactive items.

I am ready to bring in a Pro but can't seem to find anyone in Colorado who isn't giving me the line "I don't know about ExpWeb" or "you have to host it on our public server" line. I had my own secure server built as I want to learn and stay in touch with how to update etc.

Is there anyone out there that can help :)???

Expression likes to move the interactive towards the .NET platform rather than the classic ASP. Do you know what language you really want to use? ASP or .NET? I am assuming you are using a Microsoft Server, though. Are you or are you Linux? Linux will normally use PHP interactive pages unless a third party ASP parser is installed. The server type determins a lot of things...not only the coding language but also the database type. Access (and MS SQL) for Microsoft Servers and MySql for Linux. At a certain point, it doesn't really matter what type of editor you use--notepad works fine. But you should really learn basic HTML, basic CSS, a smattering of javascript and the basics of setting up a database connection and writing the data to a page without using any wizards. So what are you looking for your "pro" to do? Teach you or write code for you? Side note: just because someone built you a "secure server" doesn't mean you won't have to work hard and learn a lot to keep it secured--I pay very smart people to do that for me.
