Make a laptop a netbook - 8/9/2008 15:20:29
I've seen the little 7" display and 10" display 'netbooks', like the ones here. I prefer the larger models, like the MSI Wind, because it has a 90% keyboard (I can't stand the ridiculously small keyboards - I want to be able to type!) Anyway, I was just thinking that I've got an old Compaq laptop. I was wondering if I could put on one of these new and really fast booting OSs (especially if I could dual boot) and have it work or are the new OSs specific to the motherboard/processor. For the most part, all I need is a good web browser. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks, Andrew

Only OEM Operating systems are specific to the PC they were manufactured with. You should be able to install any OS on it as long as the laptop meets the min spec, maybe a bit over. You should consider slapping a light install of linux on it and using the linux version of Firefox/Mozilla, very fast for net browsing ;)

Thanks. Any idea what version of Linux these netbooks are using? The one I saw for the Asus 3e, seemed not to be a standard install of Linux, but customized. It had a different menu system entirely. And it loaded in 30 seconds! I've loaded Linux on this old PC before and it still took several minutes to boot.

Well, I just stumbled upon it. It is Linpus Linux Lite. It is a Taiwanese commercial version of GNU/Linux. It runs on a very low specification (CPUs as low as 366MHZ, memory as low as 128MBs of RAM and 512MBs of disk space), which should be good for my old laptop. It has the ability to switch at a one icon click from Easy Mode to a full KDE 3.5 desktop. Boot time is approximately fifteen seconds. Supposedly it also extends battery life. When I get the chance to give it a try then I'll write back and let you know how it went.

Well, sadly it doesn't work. It boots amazingly fast. But as it is optimized for 4" to 7" displays, it breaks when trying to load for the laptop display. Sigh.
